I know I have heard several in the past mentioned they had donated their hair when it came time to
"Locks for Love"

Well today my granddaughter was begging to get her hair cut
short for she was tired of it being long. Kaitlynn is only 6
years old going on 20. As soon as her mom got here to pick her
up she started on her mom which last time her hair got cut she cried(her mom did).

Well a little while ago Becky called me (Kaitlynn's mom)
and said Kaitlynn insisted on getting her long beautiful
hair cut. Her hair is coal black and silky as can be just
beautiful.

Sooooo I insisted if you're going to get it cut lets at
least donate it to Locks for Love and make a difference
along the way. So I met them where she took her to get it
cut and made sure it was done according to the specifics.
And yes we made the length of 10 inches. sweeeeeeeeet.bigsmile

First picture is Kaitlynn at Christmas and the second one
is today right before they cut it!

I will admit I have never donated but then they want take my hair since I do dye it regular & have had perms ect..
My question is how many have took the time to donate for Locks for Love?

I think that is wonderful Kristi! From experience I know, how much that can change a person's self image when they lose their hair due to radiation/chemo. Kudos to you all! drinker

Honestly I hated to see her do it but at least
it is for a good cause. I have the hair as they request it
and have printed off the form and filled it out will mail
it on Monday to them.

As soon as her mom sends me the after picture I will post
it as well she was all smiles as we left and her hair looked
so cute short but cute and will be easier for her to managed
as well.bigsmile

That's excellent. happy

My seven year old niece and about six girls from her class all
got their hair cut and donated at the same time. My niece cut
off nine inches.

If the time ever comes I'll donate mine. If they'll
have it. laugh

I donated my hair for about 15 years. The last time I cut it off was about 3 years ago and haven't let it grow back.

It is an amazing thing to do.

I felt happy knowing someone was going to smile somewhere.

Thanks for posting this Kristi.

Actually after reading about the
Locks for Love actually 80% of there donations
on hair are from kids. I had no idea but.......
I do agree it is a great thing to do.

It is because kids hair is still virgin.
Most adults have colored or permed their hair
and can't donate it.

My now 7-year-old daughter donated her hair two summers ago.

Her father was taking them all to Cuba and I knew they'd come back with dreadlocks from lack of brushing so I wanted to get them haircuts before they left.

She didn't have the required length, but I found a place that accepted donations at 7" minimum (we managed to get over 8")

This fast fall, my next-door-neighbour developed a brain tumour (and recently passed away) and needed to purchase a wig after her chemotherapy treatments and I think that helped my daughter realize just what she'd done for another.

Tx, my daughter has done it twice. Once at 6 and again at 9. She calls it her pattern. We have been on the website and she loves to read about how they use the hair and how it helps.

I don't think you can start teaching the value of giving too early. Your grandaughter looks beautiful.

Don't know if most know but for Locks of
Love they require 10" in order for them to actually
make a wig out of the hair. But.........if it is at least
6" or above it still can be sent to Locks of Love.

Even though they can not use it they actually sell it to
those that can and use that money to help fund the process
in order to make the wigs for kids. Which they only
make wigs for kids 18 and under that have a permanent
hair loss. So even if the hair is not long enough to make
a wig it is still long enough to make a difference.

I did not know this till today for I thought only if it
was 10" you could send it to them learn something new
every day.....bigsmile

Never have, since I haven't taken that much off at one time. I think it's a wonderful cause though.

Used to send the soft undercoat from the 5 Great Pyrenees (big white fluffy dogs) we had, to a lady up in Canada who would wash and weave them into hats for cancer patients. That was rather interesting.

I've only donated to Locks of Love once, but I have donated my hair 3 other times to similar causes.

With the other organization I got to meet the gal that got the wig made from my second donation. It was very cool. I still get Christmas cards from her every year. She was able to later "re-donate" her wig to someone else after chemo was done and her hair grew back. She also donated her hair once it grew enough to allow her to do so.

She has often told me that my donated hair was the reason she met her husband. He saw the flash of blonde, which caught his eye and then he fell in love at first sight once he saw her face. Also, she is cancer free now for 14 years!!

Unfortunately, that particular organization was not able to continue... it was primarily for kids with cancer, unlike LOL which is for permanent hair loss. For LOL, the recipients have to have long-term or short-term hair loss from alopecia areata (an autoimmune illness), scalp burns, or a similar medical condition.

The bad thing about LOL is that they base who gets the wigs on financial need, AND the recipients still have to pay for the wigs. LOL only makes about 100 or wigs a year. The rest of the donated hair is sold off to make money for the process, etc.

LOL and other similar organizations are fantastic. And I applaud anyone who has taken time to donate! flowers

I have worked for the Military and as a Government Contractor for years. In between assignments, I have had very long hair and have cut it two times for the cause. I am retireing now and it is getting long again. I don't think they want old mans grey hair.
