i think the issue is that this is a public school. equal and appropriate education and all that.

as a public school, activities shouldn't be able to discriminate.

I have a question about that,, would you say that enforcing dress codes is a way of discrimination or keeping some conformity as to avoid distractions?

I think there must be some guidelines which are discriminatory,,what the basis for those guidelines are is debatable

i personally have no problem with dress-codes, as they are about what people wear, as opposed to who they are.

the girl in question wanted to wear a tux. nothing outlandish about a tuxedo.

this wasnt about who she was either, in my opinion, it was about a standard of male and female partnering,, it wouldnt have stopped her from coming to the prom unless she chose to not adhere to the basic standard for that dance

Even if they wanted to enforce a certain dress code, they could have let her go with her date anyway, without wearing the tux.

good point.

msharmony, it IS about who she is...yes, she could have gone with a male, but it wouldn't be the same. it wouldn't be the "date" that she was attracted to.

the only argument against taking a female is religious. keep religion out of schools.

I think there are many reasons some oppose homosexual lifestyles, and all of it isnt religious, as I said, I dont really care about the school dance one way or the other ,,I just see both sides of the equation.

Which proves my point in that this whole thing was STUPID! The school way over-reacted. Just have the Senior Prom! Who gives a flying eff if it's guy and guy, girl and girl, black and white, christian and muslim? Just have the freaking dance! Why do so many people have to get all in a tizzy about trivial little things. God's up there laughing at us right now.laugh laugh laugh

possibly,,,I agree its stupid,, but I believe they had a right to enforce a certain conformity for the dance, (many a tomboy has worn a DRESS to a formal dancehowever uncomfortable it made them, its just a few hours for one night and nobody has to make out) and to avoid a discrimination suit, it was logical to just cancel the dance

msharmony, you and I agree on many things, but how is it logical for Fulton High School to cancel the dance? This makes no sense. Lets just assume you're Brittany and he's Steve. You just find out that the prom has been cancelled because of litigation drama between Fulton HS and two lesbian girls. Is that right that the prom is cancelled because the school is so steeped in political beliefs that they would promote their own selfish agenda and deny their very own students the great joy and privilige of having a Senior prom? Punish the school, don't punish the students.

I dont see it as punishment, I see it as avoidance of bigger issues.

so what about all the other kids who spent hundreds of dollars for their dresses, tuxes, limos and whatnots?

it is unfortunate , for certain. But it is sometimes how things go. For instance, there are times when my four teens will have an opportunity to travel with me,, three want to go one place and one wants to go the other,, so I just cancel the journey altogether rather than appearing to FAVOR ones choice over another.

let me throw this in here (keep in mind I don't think a gay couple shouldn't be allowed to attend)

Proms around here aren't paid from taxes. They are paid from fundraisers, ticket sales, wheeling and dealing with hotels or whatever. If enough parents are opposed to the couple going, then the prom wouldn't have enough funds to hold a prom....correct?

I have no problem with a gay couple going to a prom together and I wouldn't keep my son from attending the prom....but that is my choice. There are parents that feel differently. That is their choice.

I don't agree with not allowing a gay couple to attend a prom just like I don't agree with not allowing players pray before a game as long as it isn't forced on others. Can't please everyone I guess and never will be able to. I'm just glad my son's school didn't have a problem with it.

Jesus, I am so tired of the bs. People are fighting over the wrong ****ing issues. We have people dieing over seas in war, that's an issue. We have an economy that is being flushed down the toilet, that's an issue. We have homeless and jobless rates going up on an daily basis, that's an issue. We have crime rates at all times highs, thats an issue. We have N. Korea and Iran trying to provoke us into incidents on a daily basis, thats an issue.

Petty **** like this isn't. Who cares? Who cares if their gay, straight, bi, tri, omni or what ever else there is? Do they not have the right to be happy like the rest of us? I am sure these to girls do more with eachother on a daily basis during school hours then they will at a couple hour long prom.

We need to get passed this petty **** of not giving LBGT people the right they not only need, but deserve as human beings. We need to start focusing on the issues that matter, not common sense non-issues like this.

well, of course it is an issue,, it just isnt as MUCH an issue to some as it is to others,,, and I am not witnessing fighting but instead I am reading people posting their opinions on a thread

very much agreed drinker

what is important to one may be nothing to others. And sometimes a different topic breaks up all of the fighting about HC or politicians

But what about the parents and people who paid into the fundraising and are NOT opposed to it. Is the money going to be refunded to them? I'd be upset if I bought stuff to help with someone's prom, and found out there was discrimination like that going on. My money would have gone to ALL of those kids, not just the straight ones, who have male/female dates.
