I havn't had a real garden(more than a few tomatoe plants) in years. So, I have started me a small garden this year and so far so good...I have tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumber , squash, different herbs and a few garden firendly flowers (marigolds and nasturtiums for insect control)...also a little bit of sweet corn and some beans.
It is small, but I am proud of it becasue it was all hand done...I have no tiller

I wish! Cant keep the animals out of any gardens around here! well my backyard is fenced in...it is my own dogs that get in...but they are small dogs..hopefully they won't do much damage. |

Honestly more people need to be gardening now. I didn't know you could post pictures up that is cool. Yea in these tough economic times a garden is a good tool to save money and ensure your food is uncontaminated.

Nice garden. I will be planting my seedlings this week. It will be my first garden. I have lived in the city my whole life and I recently moved to a house in the country and thought I would give it a shot. Hopefully it goes well. Just trying to figure out how to keep the wildlife that seem to enjoy my yard from eating it before I can.

Wish I had the space for something like that ... apartment living means I'm prolly gonna be limited to one of those 'TopsyTurvy' things that Billy Mays or somebody like him sells ... I'll at least be able to grow heirloom tomatoes in it, 'cuz I kept my seeds from Farmers Market last year for Cherokee Purple Heart, Brandywine, and Bradley varieties ... now all I gotta do is keep the birds away from 'em ...

Well you can container garden...so many things can be grown in pots. Especially herbs. I love herbs...my daughter and I LOVE tomato,cucumber and basil sandwhiches so I have plenty of all 3 in my garden. Even a topsy turvy tomato plant will be fun to grow. I may get one myself to see how well it grows.

If you notice in the pic, I put a small birdbath in middle of garden to atract birds,,,they will eat insects and maybe scare anything else away. |

Wow! That is so cool! I live in an apartment, but I have basil, rosemary, thyme and lavender growing in pots. I'd like to try a vegetable, but not sure which one would be good. I have a hard time keeping the tiny little bugs off my herbs.

I love gardening. I havent had a garden in about a year. I have no yard so every year i had a garden at my parents. For 10 years I grew peppers, squash, corn, tomatoes, herbs, and even watermelon. My parents have since moved to KY and are begging me to move up there and plant/tend a garden there for them. it is a lot of work but it is worth it. The most have have now is herbs on my balcony.

Like i said, herbs are Great TO GROW. I worked more in my garden today...I am starting to transplant my little corn seedlings in rows (i find it easier to start them in a small plot and transfer them later) I had to get the soil ready since I am doing this by hand, foot and muscle lol. I read somewhere that the indians would plant beans, corn and squash together. The beans would grow up the corn stalks so no trellis is needed and the squash would be ground cover to keep out weeds...so, I am going to do it that way to see how it works.

I've made some starter watermelon plants but only one grew so far and now it's dead. I don't know why! lol
Yesterday I bought a blackberry bush. At the end of the month I'll start planting in my garden. |

I am going to get some rabbit fencing later. The neighbor said that will keep most things out and it is fairly inexpensive. I do already own several windchimes and garden hooks, that is a great idea! Okay this is gonna sound weird but I was told if you put CD disc on fishing line hanging like chimes over what ever you don't want the birds to eat they will stay away. It seems the silver disc reflects their image and scares them away as the breeze blows them about hey it is worth a try.
 I plan on trying it above the dogs dish on the back patio for they eat the dry dog food all the time. And boy can they eat
