Johnn's winter driving tips:

1) if you "fishtail" always steer the car in the direction you need to go

2) Never apply the brakes or the gas in a curve

3) Carry a big blanket, boots, candles, granola bars, big bag of coarse salt, flairs and keep a full tank of gas(just in case)and Don't worry about water, you can always melt a lil snow

4) Give yourself 5-10 car lengths of space ahead of you. Do not attempt to pass anyone.

5) always let someone know where you're going and when you expect to get there and what route you're taking.

ok really, what are you gonna do with a candle?
for ambiance? play some soft music on the radio and set the mood???

something I did hear that I wouldn't have thought of....use your mats under your tires to get unstuck - of course that's only if you forgot the cat litter I suppose

the candle is so you don't run your engin while stuck in that snow bank .... its enough heat to keep you from freezing ... and you can toast marshmellows too. Running your engin if the tail pipe is partly blocked could cause you to monoxide yourself into oblivion.

you also should have a folding shovel and ski goggles are also a good idea ... basically have the ability to dress yourself well enough to go out in a blizzard.

cell phone with a gps might help ya too.

as for fishtails .... front wheel and rear wheel drive makes a difference.... first nice snowfall go to an empty parking lot and practice doing donuts. Then you won't worry about it.

It amazes me that some people here in Ohio are not prepared for ice either...On the first sight of snow all those things go into my car and stay till spring..I learned to drive in the snow (Jan-Mar)when I was 15.. On Tues. we had about an inch of ice on everything.. Trees and power lines down and anywhere there is a little snow is glissening with ice.. The area between my back door and the 3 car garage behind me looks like a skating rink and so are most parking lots..People just have to learn to slow down and not panick...and to stay home when its bad out if you can...

TRY THIS,,,,,,,drive around this whole Country for over three million miles and THEN------------>say,,,HERE'S YOUR SIGN!

Their not really dumb a$$es,,,as their NOT experienced or been taught
HOW to drive in bad Weather Conditions....Many are YOUNG,,,many are TO DAMN OLD...
And truly,,,I would rather DRIVE MY OLDER RELATIVE than CARRY their coffin,,,,because reflex's DO AGE BADLY,,,in SOME PEOPLE,,and so does they EYE-SIGHTS,,,,,
I cannot tell ya how many have TRIED to KILL themselves in front of me,,,as THEY PANICKED,,,or MOVED THE WORST WRONG WAY,,,when confronted with a problem in front of them..
If you drive,,respecting the conditions, and allow 100 feet in front of you going down the highway, and always expect a driver to cut you off or take off in front of you,Pay attention to the road,,not the inside of your car,,,,,YOU MIGHT LIVE TO BE OLD..

So many die everyday on this road,,,,and ALL,,,could have lived,
if they had foreseen what was coming,,and slowed,,,or moved to prevent them hitting something,,or something hitting them...

People in GENERAL,,,HURRY WAY TO DAMN MUCH..
I would rather ARRIVE,,,,,than to be in an accident where I died or KILLED another, because I COULDN'T JUST FLOW ALONG WITH THE TRAFFICS SPEED I WAS DRIVING WITH....

We've been laughing our ***** off with all of this. Fortunately no one has had to go anywhere for work, as none of us would have anyways.

The State of Texas is insane, stupid chits with their rolling blackouts! But God forbid, not Cowboy Stadium. Screw the hospitals, not the football.

Oh, and the other hysterically funny thing is all the dumb Yanks who have been interviewed griping that they had to go out and buy warm clothes and jeans because they only packed shorts. Does no one watch the weather report?!!?! We stocked up last week on the 70degree day because the news was reporting it was going to be bad. Duh! It IS still February, and Texas does get cold!

there is a thin layer of snow over a layer of ice here in san antonio, and the highways have been shut down. it's good because people in this city when they drive over a patch of ice will slam on the brake, let go of the steering wheel, and scream "sweet mother of jesus save me"

It's really nice that I come here & find you talking behind my back!!!grumble Thanks a lot!!!!rofl

and for crying out loud do not stop unless you absolutely must in snow conditions before the plows are out -yes this means sometimes you have to roll thru a stop sign or a light if it's safe to do so to avoid getting stuck on a grade

the energy company has a list of people they deem "critical" so that the power is not shut off. if it is interrupted, the company will make sure they have power before other areas

Far from the norm here too. Inland gets this kind of snow, not often the coast. My folks have been here for 12 years and have never seen this kind of accumulation!!

Yep. I've been on both sides of that piece of paper and one would get more use out it by wiping their butt.

The power company wants it to cover their butts but just because they have that piece of paper doesn't actually mean they are forced to honor it. Its basically a "make the customer feel good" thing. The power only goes on if the whole section goes on, otherwise that person is in the dark, the same as the rest of the neighbors.

The customer service rep gets to nicely say "Yes ma'am/sir, we do show the medical notice and the crews are working on it as fast as they can" and everyone is properly covered in case of death.

I definitely agree on the freaky weather, but we didn't have an arctic front suddenly materialize over the state of Texas. If folks don't know how to pay attention to the weather reports, then they get to be laughed at.

And all of this ice down in Texas is supposed to be heading my way this weekend....but I'm used to driving in this stuff. Been doing it every year for 23 years....been on I-95 when it was a sheet of ice, but you couldn't feel it in the car, even while steering, slowing down, or going uphill.

On the other hand, we still have plenty of people up here who don't know how to handle the stuff.

Here's another tip for driving on ice: Having studded tires can help immensely, especially on thick ice - digging in while driving, and more drag if you skid.
