Do you think/believe that it is appropriate to text others while on a date with someone new? Is there a number or kind of acceptable texts? Assuming no emergency situation, when another is texting throughout the evening is that a sign, one way or the other, that s/he is not that interested in the date itself?

laugh

If my son texts me when Im on a date. I will ALWAYS reply. I simply state,"excuse me I have to answer this, its my son". If he has a problem with that... cya! My son always has been and always will be a priority

It's a sign that he or she is not interested in exercising good manners because "constant" texting during a date is rudeness in the extreme....It's a sign of addiction....It's a sign of ADHD....It's a sign (to you) to look elsewhere unless you are looking for a person with these traits....Taking emergency calls from family is the only exception....Texting to socialize while on a date is BS...

The only time I would answer a text or a phone call is if it was my kids or their grandmother...all else can wait... Myself I think it is very rude to stay on the phone while on a date.... or when around others...slaphead

I see it all the time for now days it just seems to be part of life...Guess some just don't have a few manners...noway

I agree with the responses so far! Rude otherwise!

When on a date or at another important event, I think it's only natural to turn one's phone off. Checking it at natural breaks is okay, other than that, i think it's important to give your attention where it is due at the time.

I have special ringtones assigned to each family member so if I get a text or call while I am out, I know which ones to take/check and which ones to avoid.

I leave it on because my parents are 78 and 85 and Dad has Alzheimer's and dementia, and I have a brother who is trying very hard to kick cancer's azz (a year and a half ago, we were told he had six weeks to live) so in case of an emergency I can be contacted. I also have two young adults who sometimes have issues they want to talk with Mom about and they will always come first.

I don't even have my phone out on a date. Texting throughout a date is completely rude. So is talking on the phone. If they're distracted by their phone, there's no reason for me to be on a date with them.

Even in one of my last relationships, which lasted 10 years, EVERY date I turned my phone off and kept it on hand. This way I wouldn't get a text or call during the date. Whatever was going on can wait and can be handled in due time, but that is also because I do not have any kids who would need a parent to be on call like that. If I did have a child, I would have kept my phone on in case the child or babysitter needed to get ahold of me. IMHO there is no other excuse.

Where does the average guy sign up for that? noway I hear this often... I shake my head everytime.

I have no kids.... That I know of ohwell
but if I did, I would teach them patience as in, they are NOT the nucleus of the world. Texting mom to find out where the TV remote is not considered an emergency? I figure if your(mothers)"priority" is your child, Then go ahead and have a "relationship" with them.... Cause it sure won't be with me.

EDIT*

Not that I'd want to be the nucleus of the world either... I think there's a delicate balance here.... There's a saying, you should love your partner more than your kids. Not sure why they say that but I'm thinking it's because they will leave home one day to start their own family?

I always hear that people will answer emergency calls, too. How do they know it's an emergency? I wouldn't know unless I answered my phone.

Well there are a few more exceptions...As in Eileena's case, parents with health problems...I too have that situation and certain jobs might require taking a phone call during leisure time....What I am saying is there is no, repeat no, excuse for social texting when you are on a date...It is wrong, it is rude...If I was on a date and my date did that I would pull out my own phone, call a cab, and go home....

I agree with everyone its bad manners exception in case of emergency ..with those i know if there is a emergency they always Put ER at the begining of the text...but then again your looking at your phone to see if its Emergency ....Its great to have the convience if a family memeber or loved one is in danger to have the phone with you to reply ASAP ..but also the way technology is it makes it more convient but also lacks feelings and emotions ..

Years ago everyone would give another there full attention as no phones ect but now a days its acceptable by some I personally think like Leigh2154 its rude because if a group of people are sitting at a table its rude to just interupt so its the same thing on the phone i think unless its Emergency .

"Where's the remote?" is not an emergency.... "Mom, Caithlin fell while carrying a glass and her hand is all bloody!!!" "Somebody broke into the neighbor's house and we are scared, what should we do??" These are emergencies and my daughters are old enough to know which is which.

If they are that young, a babysitter should be with them or are lazy that they don't know where the remote is, maybe I would duct tape it to their foreheads before I left. (j/k)

Yeah, he's looking at a real camera, that isn't a phone, he's probably going through their pics they just took before prom.

I use my phone on dates, first I let my friends or family exactly my plans and I keep in contact with them for safety reasons. I try and use my cell at the restroom so I do not offend the date but if it goes off and I receiving incoming of course I confirm to make sure it is not my children. If it was I would tell my date, excuse, I need to call my son,

I think it is rude to use a cell phone in any way on a date save for certain circumstances... having to let someone know where you are, if something happened or to check up on a kids or a family member.

I keep mine off and away throughout a date and if I need to use it for some strange reason I will do it afterwards or excuse myself for a moment to take care of whatever it is. The texting during dates and stuff is pretty common though... I have had it done on me before, and I see people doing it pretty often to each other. What gets me is the people on a date who are both busy texting their friends instead of talking to each other.

I've sent the 'OMG, he's totally lush' or 'I don't think I'm gonna see him again' texts while the person's been getting the drinks or gone to the loo but I haven't sent texts while he's sitting opposite me. That would be rude.
