It helps a lot when learning about a person. I think its a little better than the profile itself since people think about what they put on their profile most times. However when you ask someone about themselves its a lot more natural and you get a more truthful response if that makes any sense.

I generally just give some minor details, not in my profile.
-How long I've been out of prison.
-How many illegitimate children I have.
-What incurable std's I have.

Just the little things.ohwell

my reply is what would you like to know.
if they ask obvious questions, I refer them to my profile.
if they start a good conversation, there's a chance we'll have something to say to each other .
welcome and good luck

I'm a bitter man with a peg leg and a propensity for sheep.

I think it the worst question anyone can ask. Makes one feel like saying "you want me to send my resume and a personal motivation for applying for the job?"
Most men do 20 questions .. I hate it. I tend to overlook 1 or 2 questions, cos I suppose some just don't really know how to start a conversation.
I may reply, but don't answer their questions..

Sometimes (read that as often) you can tell more about someone by what they write on forums and to others than what they say about themselves.

That is so true. Dishonest people will lie about themselves, but their actions and their words towards others often expose their real character.

I know, right? Lots of women do 20 questions, also.

When I was single, I liked to get to know women through shared activities. If she is not perceptive enough to answer most of those superficial questions through observation, then I probably wasn't interested in her anyway.

In the boardroom, not so good...On a social networking site, I'm not going to think too much of it one way or the other...When a man writes to me, it almost always means one of two things...He's a scammer who is looking for an "established" older woman to work over or it's a guy who wants to make contact because he is interested in knowing more about me...I seldom make first contact, but when I do it's because I want to know more about him...Taking the first step can feel intimidating so when someone who seem legit writes to me and says "Tell me about you" my first thought is never negative, I TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT and I respond in kind....
