Is that like Waitangi (nz day) this is the day where to nations signed a treaty to live as one people?

ok, i had to read a little bit about what Waitangi day is.flowerforyou

Our independence day is a bit more controversial than that, as our country has been perpetually under colonial rule since the 1521 when we were claimed under Spanish rule during the era of European world exploration. After which we were occupied by the US, then a brief Japanese occupation in WWII, then US again, until we were granted democratic independent rule.

June 12 was made the official day as it corresponded to the date when the first president Emilio Aguinaldo signed an official decree proclaiming independence for the very first time in 1898. This was the day when the national anthem and flag were used. All this happened at the same time when Spain ceded the country to the US, and we eventually became a US commonwealth by the 30's in preparation for independent rule.

When WWII came along, we were under Japanese occupation for a couple of years. We later were reclaimed by the US until July 4, 1946 after WWII, when the US signed the treaty which resulted in international recognition of our being an independent republic. This was done to correspond to their own independence date.

June 12 was made the official Philippine Independence Day around the 60's to signify the original decree and declaration of our inherent right to be our own people and nation.

July 4 was eventually recognized as Philippine-American Friendship Day or Republic day instead, to signify the historic and politico-diplomatic relations between the two countries.

And that's that Annieroo, as simple and short as i can make it drinker

Thanks for your interest and for asking waving flowers

Wow thank you. That's interesting reading. Going to read more about it. I didn't realise it was around WW2. I thought it was something to do with the French or maybe with the north verses the south.

The national anthem
Composed by Julian Felipe on June 12, 1898

-------------------------------------------------

Language: Tagalog
Official Tagalog Version
Lupang Hinirang
(1958 rev. 1960's)

Bayang magiliw,
Perlas ng Silanganan
Alab ng puso,
Sa Dibdib mo'y buhay.

Lupang Hinirang,
Duyan ka ng magiting,
Sa manlulupig,
Di ka pasisiil.

Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,
May dilag ang tula,
At awit sa paglayang minamahal.

Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya,
Kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim,

Lupa ng araw ng luwalhati't pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo,
Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi,
Ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo.

-----------------------------------------------

English Version
Official Commonwealth-Era
The Philippine Hymn (1938)

Land of the morning
Child of the sun returning
With fervor burning
Thee do our souls adore.

Land dear and holy,
Cradle of noble heroes,
Ne’er shall invaders
Trample thy sacred shores.

Ever within thy skies and through thy clouds
And o'er thy hills and sea
Do we behold the radiance, feel the throb
Of glorious liberty

Thy banner dear to all our hearts
Its sun and stars alight,
Oh, never shall its shining fields
Be dimmed by tyrants might!

Beautiful land of love, o land of light,
In thine embrace 'tis rapture to lie
But it is glory ever, when thou art wronged
For us, thy sons to suffer and die

---------------------------------------

Original Spanish Version
Filipinas (1899)

Tierra adorada
Hija del sol de Oriente,
Su fuego ardiente
En ti latiendo está.

¡Tierra de amores!
Del heroísmo cuna,
Los invasores
No te hollarán jamás.

En tu azul cielo, en tus auras,
En tus montes y en tu mar
Esplende y late el poema
De tu amada libertad.

Tu pabellón, que en las lides
La victoria iluminó,
No verá nunca apagados
Sus estrellas ni su sol.

Tierra de dichas, del sol y amores,
En tu regazo dulce es vivir.
Es una gloria para tus hijos,
Cuando te ofenden, por ti morir.

Although not truly independent till 1946 as the the international community didn't recognize the independence so the the country was signed over to US rule...in 1946 the US granted the Philippines independence...

Gidday Pansy....waving

I thought snow came from Columbia and Bolivia, I never messed with the hard stuff myself.

germanchoclate1981, which city of Columbia are you referring to?

[Note: There is no letter "U" in the name of the South American nation of Colombia.]

Anyway, Happy Independence Day Philippines.
