So the forum is full of many passionately opinionated people. happy

But sometimes the passionate articulating of personal opinion has been referred to as being "judgmental " or "critical", when it is not necessarily the person's intention.

At what point does a person's passionate personal opinion crossover into being judgmental?

When the reader interprets it as such regardless of intent... Many readers cannot differentiate a persons opinion from their own emotional reaction to the opinion. An intelligent person will listen to the content and not impose his/her own emotional reaction and simply agree or disagree with the aforementioned opinion.

The moment you judge them to be.
It is all opinion.
Strangers bond this way.

The high road is still feeling the same about someone
after they have stated an opinion contrary to your own.

You attempt to sway them with rhetoric, flattery and
even some temper if the first two fail.

In the end, they most often will retain their original
opinion.

And you get the high blood pressure.

the main obstacle is that tone is very hard to interpret in black and white

where there are clues such as body language and vocal inflection in real time conversation,,

in black and white, the reader reads in their own tone and can misinterpret context or intent very easily

as for judgmental and critical, I don't see anything wrong with either, as long as its not built on a foundation that is purely egocentric

if judgement and criticism are consistent, logical, and just,if they are given to be constructive and not destructive, they are invaluable tools to improvement

Well, ironically, it's often a "judgmental" act, to declare that someone is "being judgmental." So it's a tough call to make, to decide where, if anywhere, a line can be drawn.

I suppose it's technically correct to say that someone's being judgmental when they post an actual judgment. When they say that something or someone is "good" or "bad," as opposed to saying they are "accurate" or "inaccurate," or "logical" versus "illogical."

I know how you feel, i am a naturally sarcastic person, but obviously that doesn't come across in the written sense, no matter how many "winks" or "tongue pokes" you post.

Ah well, their loss i suppose biggrin

Whenever you want to believe it does.

The only reason it would ever matter is either during a lawsuit or if you're trying to develop communication skills in a relationship you find meaningful.

And if you find online interaction with strangers via a highly impersonal medium all that meaningful then you're kinda screwed.

Mostly because of things like this:
when it is not necessarily the person's intention.

If your knowledge about someone is based solely on what they type here, having complete and utter editorial control and absolutely no real accountability or need for proof, you will never ever ever ever have any real security in knowing the truth regarding their intentions.

Relationships based on biased interpretation, a false sense of security, and a false sense of trust, are pretty much guaranteed to lead to bad things.

At best you will only ever be able to know your own intentions.
And even that's not guaranteed as people lie to themselves all the time e.g. "nice guys."

And even if you know your own motives and you know you have absolutely no intention of judging someone or being judgmental that doesn't mean other people can't see, take, or prove it as such.
And it matters not at all if you sit there and spend half your post saying things like "I'm not racist, I'm not sexist, I'm not perfect, I'm not judging, I'm not the type, because blah blah blah."

People see what they want to see.
Sometimes it's beneficial to do so because most of the time other people are trying to tell you what you should see.

So whenever you want to see an opinion as judgmental, go ahead.
It doesn't really matter except to you.

This is another perfect example that in an A B conversation it's always C that takes offence. There is always someone out there that will find some way to take every comment personal. All you can really do is feel sorry for them because anything else will be taken as provocation or a reason to continue the argument.

When he or she won't give roughly equal time and consideration to others' opinions.

You may have a point there . There really are some cases when a person is sensitive about a particular issue, and assesses a personal comment made by someone else as judgmental because their hyper sensitivity to the issue makes them feel attacked.

Hmmmm... this is a tough one.what

Maybe , where it is possible or applicable... Maybe it would help if we look at collective statements made by the opinionated person about issues in general and interactions with others in general?

If someone is generally gracious in their dealings with others, I am a lot less likely to perceive their passionate opinion as being judgmental.

In instances where you only have access to one statement made by the opinionated person, it's a lot harder to determine if they are being judgmental or not .

The title of this thread might as well be "12 vs. 10 + 2", because an opinion is a type of judgement.

im not sure if making a judgment is the same as being judgmental. I also think that having a passionate opinion does not carry the negative connotation that being judgmental does .
