Topic: Is it worth the stress

Having worked in various unionized positions within the government for years, I'd have to toss my vote for the 'easy life'.

However, you could always take the position and delegate, delegate, delegate!

That would be my favourite word if i get/take the job!

I found out yesterday that my boss has resigned and he suggested to me that i go for his job.

At the moment my job is highly responsible, but relatively stress free(im on mingle for half my shift!). If i were to take on his job, that would change. It is a massively pressurised job, and id be as busy as hell all the time, and pretty much on call 24/7. Id get a nice 5 figure pay rise for the trouble, but i cant decide if it is worth it. What would you choose, the money or the easy life?

why not take the position, be able to be on mingle the whole day, and get nothing accomplished at work.........

You were just saying they were asking to cut your salary at your present position -- in this economy maybe a change would be something to think about, maybe the new position has more job security especially now. Stress isn't good no matter how you look at it but maybe there is a way to minimize that.

I've been out of work for 13 months with no luck finding another job and things are as bad as you can imagine.

I wish you luck in your decision -- and if you don't want this job will you ask them if I can have it?laugh

to be honest in these times i would secure my place in the money until things calm down, but then later if you decide to do something else you are able...

In a way, my current job is more secure. If i under perform in the managers job i could be let go. Whereas i am proficient at what i do now and that risk isnt there. More money would be very nice, but i can live quite well on what i earn already.

You may want to sit down in a quiet spot and list the pros and cons for both positions. See which is more realistic and which is better for you for what you want out of life.
So what if you can't live to easy life with this new job, if you chose it, think how much eaier your life may be in the later years if you invest well and are smart with your money.

Another thing you might consider is if you are qualified for the position and do not seek it, will it change the way superiors see you? In other words, will they get the idea that you are less than ambitious, and will it effect their consideration of you for future opportunities.

I dont like that word superiors! Nobody is better than me! lol

You may have a point, if nothing else i guess applying would show ambition.

I dont think i am really properly qualified for the job, although it might turn out that i am the best qualified that they can hope for. It is quite a unique job where it would be difficult for anyone from the outside to fill successfully.

Basically there are two people here that would be better qualified for the position. But both of them werent interested in the job when it was available before.

Only you will know the answer to this. If you think you'll be good at it, it won't be as stressful as if you are struggling with it. If you're going to hate it, it's not worth it and it will make you dread going to work, ineffective, and stressed beyond what's healthy.

But sometimes you don't know until you give it a shot.

Good to know they think that well of you though. Best of luck to you.

If you are able to spend 1/2 the day not working, sooner or later someone's going to realize that your position isn't necessary- or that your department doesn't need so many people. The job(s) that are cut may just be yours. If you're not moving ahead in today's world, you are moving backwards.

I would probably struggle with it a lot. I would be involved in things i have never had to do before. It would take me a while to settle i think.

It doesnt quite work like that here. Right now i am at work, and obviously not actually working, but i am needed to be here still. My job is reactionary, and right now i have nothing i need to react to.

LOL, I wish I would be worrying about such options like you have. I'm jealous, many people have problems just finding a job for the past several months.

I vote for less stress and more time on mingle 2. You can always find more stress in your life if you want it, but you can never have enough mingle 2.

Mingle 2 doesnt pay the bills though!

Regardless of whether i move into this job, i will be moving onto a day position anyway in the next few months, and my mingle time is going to be slashed massively. If not almost totally.

Can't you just take the job for the money and then change your schedule the way you see fit? I mean you ARE gonna be the boss.....

Dan,

It won't hurt to apply. You'll sharpen your resume skills and it will give time to weigh your options.

I would have scope to do that to a certain degree(though i would still have bosses, the directors of the company, id just be the boss of this department). But probably the schedule rules you rather than the other way round, Its one big juggling act.

Well Dan, u know how i feel about this cos we have conversed about it.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, u have everything to gain and nothing to lose, and yes, it would mean that u r seen as being ambitious, and even if u didnt get this job, there would be nothing stopping them from offering u it/something else, next time it comes around...IF they know u r looking to progress within ur work field.
