to me a relationship can only be successful when both partners are committed and dedicated towards achieving success.

I'd ask what a ball gag is, but I don't think I want to know.

Your question was what MAKES a successful relationship.

My question is what IS a successful relationship?

I have had many successful relationships; many of them were quite short. By my definition, they were successful because they had the right elements of fun, companionship, intimacy, sharing, learning, personal growth... and left me, ultimately in a better place than I was before. So what is your definition?

I suppose anyone could answer that; I'd like to know what people think.

I kind of like the OPs definition

if both partners are committed to each other - not playing games and trying to make each other jealous by flirting with others, holding up there responsibilities to the relationship - that's what it takes

things are not always equal or perfect - sometimes we carry a little extra for the one we love - but overall there has to be an equal level of commitment

Common answers include the obvious like trust, commitment, respect, dedication, and communication, but what does all this really mean?...

I think it means this...

Being able to emotionally separate from blood relatives (immediate family)...In other words, cleave "only" to each other....
Maintain individual autonomy...
Manage crisis as a "team"...
Respect each other's individuality...
Maintaining a healthy sexual relationship...
Reality based expectations of the relationship...
A good sense of humor...
A desire to nurture each other....

I agree with everything especially the bolded part. I think a lot of those could said with having a strong friendship too, but it hopefully grows to be more.
