a man starts a message with "hello dear"
Is this similar to the English old-fashioned use of "love" when they address a woman? (which is also done by women by the way) Just asking as I'm not American, not familiar with American custom, and not sure how to interpret this use of "dear". (Is it normal/ok, is it too familiar, is it also used in day to day life, i.e. in shops at the cash register (like the English "love")?? ) Please enlighten me! |

Dont overthink it, the person that sent the message is just trying to start a conversation whilst sounding polite. Guys dont complicate things :p

I use it oftenly,especially when being polite or when I want to emphasise empathy...

I think many men use this when addressing a woman, not to say it is just an American term thou. I hear more men from the Southern states using "dear". I wouldn't take it personal. |

It is a simple pleasantry.
It is informal and about as inoffensive as a greeting can get. Being southern I use terms like "babydoll, darling, sweety, sugar, honey, pretty mama "...and a whole list of others. It don't actually mean I think a woman is sweet or pretty...it means I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. It is up to the woman to prove if she is cool or just a repressed and uptight b!t$#. |

Usally they are African ot Indian..its how they greet a woman

Lol I must be the odd one here, but I used to use it when I was being a smart @$$. Lol generally, when someone has text me using the term Dear, they really were trying to be sweet.

I don't like being called "dear" its annoying and I only use it when I'm being sarcastic about to offend someone
 sorry . Or when I'm talking to a child because they are so cute and nice and cuddly. ... I love them!! But that's a completely different topic
