How do people think about dating someone who has poor hygiene? I don't understand people who don't want to be clean. Mainly, I am into someone who has an interest with clean teeth/mouth. It's so easy to brush teeth and floss but a lot of people don't do it. I happen to love to kiss but a lot of guys don't take care of their teeth and gums, so it's kind of disgusting to kiss someone. My dentist is always impressed with my oral hygiene since I floss twice a day and brush at least 2 to 4 times a day. I like to be clean, take showers, etc. I meet too many guys that are not interested in soap.

I don't know if it is depression, or they can not smell their own BO and pet smells but it sure is rough sometimes. I wonder sometimes they just forget to wash their coats and headgear but wow so often they are really gross. Or their cars. ill I figure if their car is trashed I don't even want to see the house. lol

I agree with your point. Total personal cleanliness is very important for self esteem everyday. It's very important to smell good in all the whole body ;from hair to feet....and without perfume!!....only the soap and shampoo.

H&Kss:wink:

If a gentleman is over 40 and has poor hygiene habits, I would questions his capacity to understand,, and he may be in the beginning stages of alzheimers/dimensia
It's funny that we expect everyone to have as good hygiene habits as our own..I don't know anyone who brushes and flosses as often as you Cat, but good for you - there is nothing worse than a toothache and mouth pain..
I know guys who chew tobacco and haven't kissed their wives in years/decades..
I don't know that I could kiss a smoker either..

Depends on if it's actual poor hygiene or just in comparison to my own standards.

I don't like dating people whose standards are far less than my own.

But I don't like dating people whose standards seem excessive or ocd in comparison to my own.

There's a lot of leeway between "poor" hygiene and demanding constant sterility with a light lemon scent.

Failure at basic hygiene is a deal breaker...it's one thing if you know the guy just came from a construction site or plowing the back 40 etc, but to show up on a 1st meet w/B.O.??? (goes for women as well). While everyone's body chemistry is different, body odor & bad breath is something you can do something about. No reason to just let it go...

Never did understand how people flirted at the gym...if you are doing a good workout you are sweating & that's not cute for either gender IMO. After a shower while still pumped up on workout adrenalin is more likely to be better for flirting/meeting etc...

I have to agree with people who are over the top about hygiene. I sure don't want to set at the restaurant table while someone has to go to the bathroom to do chronic re-groom. Or worse uses some gross smelling hand sanitizer that makes me think of anything but romance or enjoying myself.

And I have to agree about the gym.

What does REALLY irritate me is when medical staff; especially in hospital settings who are trying to come on to each other around patients like they are just a potato bag laying there and isn't uncomfortable because of their antics.

Not keen on poor hygiene either.
Met this bloke earlier this year and when he bent over to kiss my cheek, there was this dank, moldy smell coming from his clothes.
Now I've lived in old, dank houses myself, and I know you can't always do much about that. But at least when you go on a date, make sure your clothes smell clean and fresh.

I immediately found myself thinking "If you're clothes aren't clean, what is your personal hygiene like?"
And maybe he showered 2x a day, brushed 2x a day etc... but it's this instant connection when you pick up that scent of dank clothes.

ROFLMBO Bricky. But yea that is a good way to spot a married man fooling around.

Has anyone ever wondered why people wear their parents cologne? I have been told women do it as much as men but isn't it kind of a buzz kill to snuggle up to someone and they smell like your parents? lol or worse your grandparents? And yikes a baby? I am way past the romance of maternity but even when I wasn't it only made me nervous if I was thinking can this guy get me preggars? lol

I have to be truly honest here
I personally check out their teeth, eyes, and skin. Yes my nose is bad it picks up the weakest smells

There can be medical reasons too but if its just plain lazy I move on.
Smell of smoke makes me feel ill and I feel like vomiting.

I also think if I take the time to look after myself why can't others it is doesn't take that much effort to have a shower, brush teeth and have pride on themselves.

I do like it when he has a nice gentle smell not the whole pharmacy.

Sometimes I will take two baths a day if I have worked in the yard or have done some sort of mechanical work that gets me sweaty. Hell...if it has been a marathon sexcapade then I will need a shower too.

I just watched this quirky Indie film titled "Treading Water". It was about a child born with a condition that caused him to smell like fish. He was a secluded outcast through childhood and early adulthood because of it. It's true that some people have little or no control over their odoriferous emanations. It's also true that some are lax about hygiene. But, I think the majority of "first-world" folk have been marketed into an unhealthy mindset of what good hygiene looks and smells like. Strong BO... eww, strong perfumy fragrance... also eww. Being smelly and unkempt is repulsive, striping away natural body oils and beneficial bacteria can be unhealthy. Like with most things, it's about finding your individual balance point of preference and tolerance.
