there are so many people in our lives who come and go to serve the purpose which they are destined to become for us. But we only need one to make us feel complete.

YOU complete me...have you ever said that to anybody ?
..yes.. when I was 7 years old I said it to my teddy bear...lol

Only to my best friend, i think when you find a person that has the same wave length as you, even if you fall in love with someone, there's this string of connection between the two of you. Like you have the same mind and you dont even have to talk to get each other.

I think that feeling 'complete' can only come from within.

The right someone special might 'broaden your horizons' but 'complete' implies a finish and I am not finished with this life so 'complete' in the literal sense will never happen till I'm dead.

I think 'satisfy' might be a better word to use. Gaining satisfaction from someone special can turn a mundane existence into a worthy experience which might make someone feel 'complete' regarding love. However, love is not the only thing we need, to feel 'complete'.

Not those words, no...

I have always tried to keep my own identity and let my significant other enhance rather than complete me.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with thinking this way, or saying it to someone - but I wouldn't.

No. I've never said that to anyone.laugh But is being complete the same thing as being fulfilled? I'm gonna use the two terms interchangeably for this thread only.

I don't find completion in any one person or thing . But if I am to be be honest with myself, I find completion/fulfilment in a number of persons and things combined.Humans are multi-layered , and so are our needs , from the physical to the emotional, romantic, intellectual, creative etc.

I don't think that the romantic part of me will ever feel complete without a fulfilling romantic relationship . But at the same time, even if I had the most amazing mate in the world, I still wouldn't feel complete without the love of my family and a handful of close friends,a fulfilling job, and hobbies and goals that I am passionate about, because I am wired with other needs that a romantic connection was not meant to fulfil.

I salute the people in the world who feel complete in themselves, but my truth is that a number of people and things complete me. I live on an island but I will never BE an island. happy

I so agree with you and love how you state a partner might add 'texture". Great description! :)

It sounds rather narcissistic, the notion that people are supposed to serve a purpose. A bit like imagining that the earth is the centre of the universe and all nature exists just for exploitation by humans. We may feel like the stars of our own films, but maturity comes with the disappointing realisation that we're barely extras in the films of others. Suggest you assume a more realistic neutral cause and effect perspective. There may week be material or self - development benefits, but those are incidental. Good luck, luck being the mystery of complex causality.

Peggy122 that is.
codependency could be fine, if both are elevated and not oppressed. I don't think people are or should be complete as islands. we can complete each other, most likely collectively rather than binary. I don't expect my man to be totally perfect or self sufficient. just hope the vulnerabilities or shortcomings are ones I'm well suited to assisting with
