I met my wife on another site 15 years ago and we hit it off, we've been married for 8 years and have two beautiful kids together. It started out as a hook-up but it's really no different than meeting at a bar, or club, or whatever. Back then though sites weren't infested with fake profiles, bots and scammers like they are today.

Online dating is a misnomer.
You can't really date online.
The best you can hope for is correspondence.
Often, emotionally charged correspondence.

Dating is courting. It is usually done in the expectation of finding a mate.
It involves touching the other person. Them touching you.
It involves smelling, pheromones and idiosyncrasies that can't be done over a TCP/IP connection.
You have to meet or it is a waste of time and effort.

Dating sites are not for going on dates. Dating sites allow you to find someone that might be a date. Part of the selection process.
The selection process is much more complicated than finding someone in real life.
In real life, you walk up and say hello. You experience the other person in real time. Online, you are depending on that person being honest and descriptive of themselves. You can never be sure the person you are talking to is even a person. Could be a group of people just telling you what you want to read. In real life, you have a better chance of talking to an actual person.

Online dating sites are tools, nothing more. If you use the tool correctly, you can find a real person to date that is in sync with your desires.

I've been online dating for years, and never actually had a date, met a human, or even been stood up. frustrated

But:
I have re-assessed my life and wants a few times, done some creative writing, got fairly good at spotting scammers, read some interesting stuff, and seen some pretty faces.

Also:
Wasted hundreds of hours on a screen, wasted many $$ on dating sites, got hopes up and then dashed, realised dating sites are only for the attractive. tears

a bit of ying, a bit of yang, a bit of WTF.

We're on a dating site but nobody wants to date. Why be here if you aren't available?

I think the dating sites will have to evolve as time goes by. It is true that only the attractive will really get quick results. I find that everybody is cautious about meeting anyone. I don't really blame them. Where is that one in a million person who isn't a scoundrel and sees past that shell? On a recent trip out of town I spotted 2 guys who were from another site and they did not try to get to know me or ask anything first. They took one look and took off...and they did not ask for money or anything online.

Perhaps it's best to live your life the best you can and participate socially on forums like this and hope for the best. It takes a long time to get that one-in-a-million. I wish I knew about the Mingle forums 10-15 yrs ago, would have at least met a few guys by now.

As society evolves, it either becomes more complicated, degenerates or in some parts of the world, becomes a bit of both.

It is not a waste of time to learn new ideas on the forums, it's not a waste of time or money to look up the different types of shady procedures and laundering schemes. Builds character.

It's difficult finding that needle in a haystack--if it's not out there and time is running out live out your days the best way you can and that is all you can do. The dating site may well become the social site and that is why people return to the forums.

Sure .. sort of new life experience .. something which you've never had before. Emotionally like a roller coaster - if you've managed to find someone, and you really believe she's the right one. One day you're up in the skies .. just to find yourself deep in the bottom the other day.
The only serious stuff you'll get is a proper heart and headache .. due to all of those sleepless hours - days and nights, wasted sitting on a computer for years.
However, you might get some really wonderful friends to communicate with, if lucky and the knowing that nothing can beat the real life.

If you're about something serious, then try looking around you .. a girl next door maybe .. online will grant you with lots of trouble to deal with and nothing more.
My two cents ..
