In English usage, these two words can be very interesting, and very confusing to non-English speakers.

In some situations, romance and love can refer to the exact same things. In other situations, they can have a not-quite opposite meaning.

Most of the time, when English speakers refer to 'romance,' they are talking about the activities that people perform in an effort to endear themselves to someone, or in order to persuade that person that they love them. In that sense, the romance isn't love itself, it's things that the person doing the "romancing" does, in order to show that they do love someone.

Giving a person gifts, like flowers, and giving them personal praise, can be things that you do to show that you love someone, but we don't usually call those actions "loving" the person, we say they are "romancing" the person.

That's how we come to have an odd use of the word "romance." As in "persuade someone FALSELY that you love them." Go through the MOTIONS of showing care and desire for a person, without actually caring for or desiring them, can be referred to as "romancing" them.

What makes the words most confusing to non-English (and to some English speakers), is that the OTHER word, "love," is so often used to refer to actions as well as to feelings. Whereas "romance" almost always refers ONLY to actions, "love" gets used to refer to anything and everything, from JUST a feeling one has, to desire, to hunger, to sexual activities.

In the end, these words can be tricky to completely understand, because you can love someone without ever wanting to romance them; you can romance someone, even though you don't love them; and you can have someone leave you, saying that though they understand that you do at least think that you love them, that the romance has gone out of your relationship with them.
