Do you understand the difference between low socioeconomic and poverty . perhaps go visit the slums in India ..and compare that to your perception of western poverty

yes and the slums in India could possibly visit wore torn countries with beheadings ...

saying 'it could be worse' does not deny that it is bad or needs to improve
how much do you think the cost is for a person to survive living in the slums or any other impoverished country is .. I read a report that quoted a $1.25 a day . How would you judge or compare their quality of life to a beneficiary ??

I would compare some things similar and some things not .... are we gonna double down on the 'its worse someplace else' argument though?

No, comparing our nation to other nations does not resolve anything. I do feel we have poor, destitute and homelessness that needs to be addressed before we allow multitudes of poor and homeless in from other countries. State governments (especially in the SW) are having to provide much needed money feeding and providing medical care for those coming into the country illegally instead of helping our own. Our priority should be helping our citizens who need help first. The democrate's and news media don't seem to see it that way.

AS a democrat myself, I dont think we can have only 'one priority' there are far too many issues to be tackled for us to tackle them only one at a time. I believe we can work on helping 'our own' and finding humane ways to deal with those who are here without proper documentation.

I understand your point but to want open boarders is a move to financial and social chaos. And there are both democrate's and some republican's who have advocated this avenue. Those entering legally should be integrated into our nation but illegal entry needs to be curtailed.

my ancestors are from 2 point of views.

first, I can trace my roots to Traverse City, Michigan, where one settlement of Blackfoot Sioux Native Americans was established [father's mother].

second, I can trace my roots to Wabash, Indiana, where one settlement of Miami Native Americans was established [mothers father - medicine man].

third, I can trace my roots to 1700's when the Jews settled in New York City, New York [father's Dad Mother's side][there is a ship manifest documented how they entered America and became citizens].

fourth, I can trace my roots to 1800's when the Scot/Irish settled in New York City, New York and then to Boston, Massachusetts [fathers Dad Father's side][there is a ship manifest documented how they entered America and became citizens].

fifth, I can trace my roots to late 1800's when the Italians settled in New York City, New York [mother's Mom side][there is a ship manifest documented how they entered America and became citizens].

what I am trying to specify here is this important clarity of my heritage...[there is a ship manifest documented how they entered America and became citizens]…

my people's did it the right way, SO, I have no reason to feel obligated for these illegals from Mexico to get a break.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE JEWS - SCOT/IRISH - ITALIANS came to America?

because they were in horrible conditions and could not make a living in their native land.

BUT, THEY STILL DID IT THE RIGHT WAY!!

THEY WERE LEGALLY DOCUMENTED AND WENT THROUGH THE PROCESS SET UP.

if the Mexicans want to be here, GOOD FOR THEM!!

but ONLY, IF THEY DO IT THE RIGHT WAY!!

other than that, they DO NOT DESERVE TO BE HERE!!

the 'right way' happened to favor white Europeans who had been in the states for two years already ... times have changed ... the comparison is not quite the same. ...

Aside from the fact that the "right way" fails to recognize the simple fact that, as anyone who was awake in high school history would know, the Mexicans were here first!

That's like saying it's okay for you to go to your backyard, as long as you do it "the right way".

Geneva (AFP) - The UN's top expert on extreme poverty warned Thursday that contemptful and cruel US policies towards the poor were disenfranchising millions, posing a threat to democracy in the country.

People living in poverty in the United States are seeing their rights "increasingly ignored", said Philip Alston, the UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, he said a "complete lack of compassion" characterised US policies towards the poor, who are becoming ever more "invisible in the political process".

According to the latest available statistics, from 2016, some 40 million Americans live in poverty, 18.5 million live in extreme poverty, and more than five million live in "Third World" conditions.

-----------------------------------------------------

Alston in particular decried policies that punish and imprison people who cannot afford to pay bills or fines, weakening their chances of finding or holding a job, housing and stability, and fuelling a cycle of poverty and desperation.

"Mass incarceration is used to make social problems temporarily invisible and to create the mirage of something having been done," he said in a report published earlier this month and based on a visit to several US states and territories last December.

"It is difficult to imagine a more self-defeating strategy," the report said.

-----------------------------------------------

He warned that negative attitudes towards foreigners often foreshadow attitudes towards other vulnerable groups in a society.

"I think once you have departed from that basic commitment to minimum humane standards, it doesn't usually stop at the borders," he said, describing the developments as "deeply troubling".

Alston is due to present his report to the rights council on Friday, just days after Washington decided to withdraw from the body, meaning no US representatives are expected to be present to react to his findings.

Really? well, then maybe a move to some other country is in order...living here is no mandatory. you know I have been to my share of foreign countries.. saw many poor people with not even the basics.. no water.. no electricity..no work.. no food... no help.. no hope

Worked in China for about 2 years.. you want to see poor.. try looking there. Our poor are living on 5th Ave compared to the poor over there. And what did the "UN " say bout China's treatment of the poor.. hmmm.

Ill go when those who complain about welfare recipients leave ... or is the 'if you dont like something, move' argument only one sided?

its the " if you don't like something.. then do something about it" point that I am making

Everyone can complain.. that's easy. You don't like the quality of your life.. then do something about it... you don't like the way things are run.. again, do something about it.

That is my point...., Do something... and just typing or complaining is not.... something.

The problem with these people is they don't have enough sense to better themselves. $10,000 in eic is enough to make a down payment on a house but they piss it away. Like on a cruise, big screen tvs, salon, their menz.
When they start working, the money goes to the club, $400 sneakers etc. It's not opportunity keeping them down. It's personality.
Those women at Honda were living off grandma for free and still couldn't get ahead. But the owner of the club was getting ahead.
They don't understand how to budget and save. It doesn't matter what we give them
One teenage mother was volunteering for more ot and saving for a housing. She just happened to be white. The rest would have a fit if they had to work the weekend and laying out of work and getting pregnant again.
They had the same opportunities as the one doing the right thing. They just didn't want it. But they would complain what the govt wasn't doing for them.

Jogger detained for 2 weeks after accidentally crossing US border from Canada

A woman jogging along a beach accidentally crossed the US border from Canada, and ended up detained in Washington state for two weeks.
Cedella Roman, 19, was visiting her mother from France when she went jogging last month just south of White Rock, British Columbia. She mistakenly continued jogging into Blaine, Washington, she told CNN partner CBC. As she stopped to take a picture of the view, she turned around and saw two US Border Patrol officers approaching her.
"He stopped me and started telling me I had crossed the border illegally. I told him I really hadn't done it on purpose, and didn't understand what was happening to me," she told the CBC.

Roman, a French citizen, was not carrying any documents at the time.
"They put me in the caged vehicles and brought me into their facility," she said. "They asked me to remove all my personal belongings with my jewelry, they searched me everywhere.
Then I understood it was getting very serious, and I started to cry a bit," she added.

US Border Patrol arrested Roman on May 21 and transferred her to an immigration detention center in Tacoma, Washington, according to Carissa Cutrell, public affairs officer with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "If an individual enters the United States at a location other than an official port of entry and without inspection by a Customs and Border Protection officer, they have illegally entered the United States and will be processed accordingly," Customs and Border Protection said.

"It is the responsibility of an individual traveling in the vicinity of an international border to maintain awareness of their surroundings and their location at all times to ensure they do not illegally cross the border."

Authorities received her "travel documents" three days after her arrest, but it wasn't until days later that both Canadian and American immigration officials determined she could enter Canada. She remained in custody for a total of two weeks. She was taken to the US-Canadian border near Blaine, Washington, on June 5, Cutrell said.

Roman's mother Christiane Ferne, who visited her daughter several times while she was detained, said her daughter's detention was unfair because she says there are no signs warning pedestrians of the international border. "It's like a trap ... anybody can be caught at the border like this," Ferne told CBC.

Good thing she was an adult, otherwise she might have been "disappeared" from her mother.

And yes it is like a trap, Mueller's working to fix that.

Remember you said that when you're walking through the woods and a Copperhead bites you..

"I never even saw it! I didn't know it was there!"

And then the doctor will say: "ignorance is no excuse."

My house is surrounded by woods on 3 sides. I'm 46 years old and I've never been bitten by a snake. It's scary that you compare crossing a bored to a snake. Does the border move? Lol Brown skin isn't an excuse now that Obama isn't in office.

Obviously, you've never even left your state. Otherwise you would see in every state line to signs. The first one says "Now leaving (fill in the blank), and the next sign says "Welcome to the great state of (fill in the blank).

Apparently, you've never even left your own little town, because even city limits are clearly marked.

Running on a beach, with no fence, no signs, no markings, or any indication you just entered the country does not qualify as "ignorance". And in this instance borders actually DO move.

It's called the ocean, and the tide.

And I might add, that "Brown skin" would be even more of an excuse, with a Klansman sitting in the Oval Office.

It's not illegal to cross a state line. A few minutes down my road and I'm in another state. I know when I cross over. Like I said, ignorance isn't an excuse for not obeying the law.

When I'm driving down my road, if I get out of the car and jog through the woods in the same direction, I still cross the state line. Nope, they don't put sign all through the woods to notify dumbasses.

oh that woman is full of shite and so are you Viper,Ever been to Whiterock BC? unless the woman is a complete idiot and a marathon runner, the only way into Blane "jogging" is running on Zero Avenue ( the border is unguarded or jogging on the highway or railway tracks

Ive been to Whiterock many times its a gorgeous little city and since she is french there are bilingual signs posted , so she is full of shite.

Good thing Border patrol was doing their job and got her and it shows would be crosser what happens when you cross illegally.

Everyone who visits Whiterock knows this.
