Your question is missing a a piece of information. The one about if you're married or in a long term relationship...

Not an affair, which I consider to be an extra-marital sexual relationship / fling.

BUT... if one is involved in a relationship and taking part in this, he/she can sure as hell exceed the boundaries of their partner and their relationship.
I think very few partners would be okay with their loved one behaving in that manner with another person. And since you mention 'affair', it means the partner doesn't even know about it.

Doesn't make it an affair in my view, but makes it wrong as bleep for sure!
If someone cannot be respectful and faithful to their partner they best get a divorce so they have the freedom to flirt with whomever.

If you’re behaving in a way that you wouldn’t tell your significant other about,
I’d say it’s not OK, regardless of what you call it.

To me, that crosses the line if you are talking sexually to another while you are with someone.. Then it is time to regroup why you are even in a relationship...

Flirting on line is a dream ... because there has to be another person involved..... so dream on !!!!

Flirting in a chat room involving sexual comments is fine, if you were totally single and unattached...

All other scenarios is just plain wrong ...

See I like your way of thinking..

Not a thing wrong with chatting with others as long as it is based on a friendship and not sexually...

It is all about Respect for the one you are with...

Thanks

Respect all and all will respect you huh! !

My way of flirting online is checking out your profile many times and hoping you have the courage to make that first move..

Having an on line affair means you are cheating on your partner ..the term affair maybe misinterpreted by some but not by all !!

Is Flirting / Speaking sexually in a Chat Room considered an Affair ??

Better for someone to ask the person they're in a relationship with than online strangers.

As a purely hypothetical it's just "depends."

Other than that, for me personally: " Is Flirting / Speaking sexually in a Chat Room considered an Affair ?? "
I see it more as a potential symptom of emotional, social, personal, or mental problems.
Most especially if you've never met the chat roomer in person.

You ever see the movie "Lars and the real girl?"
To me your question is like if Lars had a wife, then started a relationship with his doll, and then he comes online and asks "is dating my doll considered an affair?"

To me there's a deeper issue than defining what an "affair" is.

I think you need to ask how would you feel if your spouse did it too and you caught them? How would you feel? Also, if children are involved, what sort of example are you to them, if they found out?

Flirting is very subjective .., it depends on interpretation , context and intent . Sometimes a smile or compliment is taken as flirting but that was not the intent

As for sex chat . The intent is usually clear . However , Sometimes the boundary between fantasy and reality is blurred ..

An affair generally assumes one or both are not single and implies a physical and/or emotional intimacy . There can be flirting and sex chat without it leading to an affair .

Even chat rooms vary ... some cater towards adult fun and others less so . Flirting behaviour is usually indicative of the type of chat room and environment . For instance... mingle forums have a Pg13 rating . Not sure they are considered a chat room .

I agree about the honesty and betrayal when already in a relationship.

This thread specifically indicates sexual flirting but does not specifically indicate while in a relationship with someone else.

The way I see it, all intentional flirting is sexual in nature, whether online or face to face. Its a sexual 'come on' cue.

Also, in my opinion, flirting is relative to the observer. When I was married, my wife would tell me I was flirting when I wasn't. I've been flirted with and never made such a connection. I've been flirted with and was repulsed by it. I've been flirted with and embarrassed by it. I've been flirted with and turned on by it.

Flirting can be obvious or subliminal, accepted, rejected or misread as something else. It can be slight or extreme. It can be fabricated by the observer from another action, entirely devoid of flirt.

Words in a chat room can be misinterpreted or blazingly clear. The intent of the written word can be lost in translation. Word choice, sentence structure, punctuation and timing play a major role in chatroom flirting. It requires commonality from both the composer of the flirt and the reader.

What's worse is the nature of texting in chatroom settings. Many who frequent chatrooms do so an a device which is not geared to full paragraph structure. Most of the correspondence is text speak.

The nature of the chatroom is also important to flirting. A chatroom on a dating app is more likely to have flirting than say, a chatroom about fixing computers or cars. Not to say it doesn't or can't happen but it is unlikely.

Flirting is not always sexual in nature (it is most common tho). Flirting can also be done in building online friendships and building self-esteem in others. Some people need an ego boost, others see it and try to help.

Face to face, a lot of flirting happens thru positioning, facial expression, eye contact and body language. In chatrooms, those important cues are absent. That fact requires the words to carry more intent and causes the flirt to be exaggerated.

Chatrooms are also usually short segmented interactions. A lil different from bulletin board/forum interactions and much different from written/mailed letter correspondence.

Flirting by phone is more effective than chatrooms/written flirts.
Flirting by video connection is more effective than phone flirts.

Everybody flirts with somebody in their lifetimes.
The younger generations tend to flirt more because their reproduction incentives are higher.
The older generations tend to flirt in a quest for companionship, either temporary or long-term.
Everyone flirts, including babies and toddlers.
The reasons for flirting change but flirting happens.

Now that is a response. ... open , non judgemental and civil . If there were more people like you in here then this site would be a better site to visit but sadly you're the lone ranger here. Nevertheless, I love your brain , rock on.###
