In just under two months i am gonna be the Best Man at my friends wedding.

Which, of course, means i have to try to write and perform a funny speech.

I intended to get the speech written ages ago, but except for a page of scribbles i made a while back, i have barely started.

I'm not OVERLY worried about the actual writing of the speech, i can be pretty humourous when i put my mind to it. Its the performing of the speech which concerns me the most. I have never had to do any significant public speaking before. There are going to be over 150 people at this wedding, so its hardly a small crowd.

So, any advice? Any stories?

Any decent lines i could use? I need a good opener if anyone has one.

As tempting as it is, DON'T do it drunk. That's for later, lol, but not the main speech.

The only other advice I can give is to remember that it will be over fairly quickly, and everyone will go back to watching the bride and groom :)

I have done a little bit of that. I am trying not to over do it though, as its quite easy just to cobble together a bunch of standard lines used at every wedding. I wanna TRY and do something a bit more unique, if i can.

You will do a wonderful speech because even though you will inject your wonderful humor into it, you will also speak from the heart. your words will be significant, I am not kidding about this...the speech that the best man gave at Danielle's wedding was incredible and was from the heart. He talked of their past time together...and where life has brought them...and then talked of the best wishes for the future! He also talked of when Danielle and Keith met...and had a couple of short stories about them as children...he got some info from us parents prior to the reception...it made the speech very meaningful and was truly from the heart!!

the humor was light yet it was noticeable...which made it a great speech and not some pushing the limit of good taste thing that was meaningless...

Good Luck!!

Do i have to pretend you are all naked as well?

I am happy to play the fool online, and even in real life in the right circumstances, but i doubt my speaking skills in front of large crowds.

as an example, Kevin (the bestman) talked about how people thought all the gold was out of the Black Hills of South Dakota, yet Keith found his treasure there... (Danielle and Keith met while they were working summer jobs in the Black Hills area next to Mount Rushmore)

He also talked of how Danielle loved her Cabbage Patch dolls and how he hoped that their children would be a bit better looking than those dolls were...

He talked of how Keith was always such a hard worker and how handy that would come in for Danielle cause Keith would work hard to be a great husband and how great he would be working around the house! then he handed her a tablet labeled "Honey Do List"...

he kind of brought it all together by talking of the riches of life and how they had found them in each other...

there were parts in the speech that brought tears to my eyes because it was so touching, and parts that had us laughing out loud...

hope this is helpful...

There might be some prewritten speeches online where all you have to do is insert the name.

Thanks Deb! I am glad you have faith in me.

I have known the groom for approaching 20 years, i should(hopefully) beable to add the sentimental side of things fairly easy. We have been through quite a lot together, so i must beable to come out with a couple of stories suitable. The BEST stories though are highly unsuitable! Like the time he got so drunk that he snogged a transvestite! haha

I wish i could add that one in. Who needs jokes when you have material like that?!
