Unless Legal Immigrants plan to apply for citizenship, they shouldn't be required to learn anything.

In the private business sector, folks are, and should be free to cater to any language they care to. When I was doing flea market sales, I didn't refuse to sell something just because they didn't speak English.

I do believe in Government, the only language to be spoken or printed should be English.

If anyone doesn't speak or read English, they could hire a private translator and/or pay an additional fee for forms in their language.

"Topic: "This is Alabama; we speak English here" - WTF!"

sorry

that made me laugh

Have you ever heard someone from Alabama speak?

I've lived in Texas and Alabama...and to my experience...not any difference in listening to either one speaking...sounds like the same dialect!

I think it's important that we look at this issue as a safety topic also.a year or so ago I was working in a large factory as a mechanic.Nearly everyone who worked there was non english speaking Mexicans or very poorly speaking Mexicans.Nearly everyday I would get broken nail guns dropped off on my desk for repair. The reason they were breaking was because they would never oil them.I tried to explain to them that if they didn't oil them they would break. But of course they couldn't understand me.When my boss kept getting charges for new parts(which could reach into hundreds of dollars per gun)he told me he was going to fire who ever failed to oil their guns.Despite me showing them what to do and telling them what to do they still would never do it.So in the end they were fired for something they probably had no clue over.If they would have spoken or understood english they would still have a job.

Another time I came to work with a note that one of the forklifts had a defective mast and not to operate it.I put a tag on the steering wheel saying "Danger do not operate" along with a description of the problem and took the key out.It wasn't 10 minutes later on of the Mexicans had taken the forklift(he also had a key)and tried to dump a load of garbage into the bin.He ended up breaking the entire mast off the forklift and spilling a few gallons of hydraulic oil all over the ground.Damage to the forklift was estimated at over 6,000 dollars(which was a rental). The tag was steel on the wheel!Of course he couldn't read it nor did he have the slighest idea of how safety procedures worked. He was also fired.

It seems to me that your boss is an idiot and an a-hole.
An idiot for hiring people who couldn't communicate effectively.
An a-hole for hiring what would seem to be illegal aliens, instead of U.S. citizens, and then firing them for screwing up because they couldn't communicate effectively.

If it were so easy... unfortunately I would be accused of being discriminating...

Or having the race card thrown in my face, or better yet... "profiling"?

I work hard for the little bit of income I make in retail, yet I am constantly being taxed for more and more services for peoples that cannot even try and become "legal us citizens" when offered the chance.

I am in the poverty level of income, yet I do not partake of welfare, or any government handouts. I do my best to live within my means... and do not expect any special treatment because of my circumstance. If I do not have the money for something... I don't get it. Period. I do not consider anything a right besides human decency...

This country cannot continue to be expecting everybody to take care of everyone ... and that goes for foreign aid as well. Yes, it is sad, that some peoples's lives in other countries are so bad... but the USA cannot expect everyone here to keep footing the bill. It is so out of hand now. If I work and cannot afford a luxury (not a necessity) why should people who come here illegally be able to acquire such on my tax dollars? There are people who are driving vehicles, eating and living better than I... and not working for it...they are given special preferential treatment, to me that is just wrong...

I have been through the LEGAL IMMIGRATION process and as far as I understand, to even COME here you must prove that you either have work(which in MOST cases is going to require that you have transportation or know english),,,or you have to show you have a SPONSOR. This sponsor is legally responsible for what you NEED, not the government. This sponsor is responsible for your support until you can support yourself,,,, period. Thats the laws and they should be applied equally to all. If you come not knowing the language , fine, , you should be able to (and are expected to) rely on your sponsor for your needs until you can survive on your own.....
a drivers license shouldnt be such a necessity if you actually have a sponsor,,,it should be the LAST of ones concernes. Many american citizens survive every year without driving.

Driving is a privilage, not a right. While it is useful, it is not necessary. A buddy of mine, who was born here and lived here his whole life, is in his 40's and still has no driver's license.

I'm sure he's in a place where he's close by to a lot of things, or there is good public transportation. It isn't like that everywhere, though. So in many places, driving is necessary.

You can say that...but driving is still JUST A PRIVILEGE... no matter how or what necessity anyone believes it to be. I am sorry, but not everyone should drive, nor be allowed to drive if they cannot comprehend the rules of the road, or even at the bare minimum the signs and signals on the roads. There is a responsibility involved when one gets behind the wheel, not just to one's self...but to every other individual who shares the roads. And that is that one understands what is happening, at all times and is fully aware of what the signs and signals are directing drivers to do.

When you apply for citizenship you are required to learn some English. There is nothing wrong with that because it will help them here in this country.

If we are going to make a LEGAL language then we have to be fair and make the Native American languages the legal languages of this land because it is.

We need to be more bi lingual in this country, that is already a proven fact. So instead of trying to drive the other languages out of this country we need to encourage people to keep their native language and to learn more languages. We are a world community here regardless to the small minds we seem to have.

I was just wondering,,, would it be an issue if ..

a mexican official said ( in spanish of course)
"This is mexico , we speak spanish here"

or a french official said ( in french)

"This is France, we speak French here"

or an Italian official said

"This is Italy, we speak Italian here"

..???? just wondering , because I kind of would EXPECT those languages in those parts of the worlds,,, is it unreasonable to expect a specific language in the USA(not to limit to one language, as most european countries have many languages spoken, but to EXPECT at least the one be spoken)

Spanish is an official language in Mexico and French is an official language in France. The United States as a whole does not have English as the official language.

But yet... you cannot deny that just because "English" has not been properly stated as the "OFFICIAL LANGUAGE" in the USA... that it is not the language that our forefathers used when setting up the 13 colonies and the exact same language when drawing up the constitution of the UNITED STATES????

This country was billed from the beginning as a melting pot of all cultures.

Send us your poor etc...

We are still no better than that and we shouldn't try to pretend we are.

We are a country of vagabonds from all over the world who came here hoping to make a better life for themselves. None of them better than that others and none less important.

So all the white faces I see who want to claim this country and pretend they were here all along need to step off of the false bravado.

The natives of this country were not white.

The natives of this country did not speak English.

Ok.. so you are saying my life as I live it... is stereotyped misinformation? I am still taxed... regardless...of how much or how inconsequential you think my amount of contribution may be... and those tax dollars are being misused. I don't really care what you say however... I know what I see in my day to day existence, and I am sure I am not the only one who witnesses this... standing in line behind someone at the store who is using their food stamps for stuff that I cannot afford... so I am being forced as are others to support someone's else's lifestyle because for some reason our government has decided it is a right for these people to have? Why? Because they have procreated more than they can afford? So now I must afford it for them? Come on... give me a break? What happened to responsibility for one's self? It would be one thing if the people came here and legally became a citizen. Tell me... what is so god awful terrible about that? I have witnessed several of my friends who have gone through the process of legal citizenship. It is possible... and not the horrible, terrible, catastrophe it is made out to be in these discussions.

If for no other reason, so other groups can't vote in some other language.

I am happy and am not self depreciating as you are so nice to point out. But I don't need to explain that about myself... as per your own words... " you do not know how I live".
