I don't really have a problem with accomodating the languages of foreign guests who are in this country legally.

This is kind of a knee jerk over reaction to the illegal problem

but I think issues like this and the Arizona law are good bcause rightly or wrongly they bring it to the attention of the government that people are fed up with the illegal situation and unsecured border

if you are in Mexico or Canada without documentation you WILL be jailed. why is it good enough for them but not us?

I have been through the LEGAL IMMIGRATION process and as far as I understand, to even COME here you must prove that you either have work(which in MOST cases is going to require that you have transportation or know english),,,or you have to show you have a SPONSOR. This sponsor is legally responsible for what you NEED, not the government. This sponsor is responsible for your support until you can support yourself,,,, period. Thats the laws and they should be applied equally to all. If you come not knowing the language , fine, , you should be able to (and are expected to) rely on your sponsor for your needs until you can survive on your own.....
a drivers license shouldnt be such a necessity if you actually have a sponsor,,,it should be the LAST of ones concernes. Many american citizens survive every year without driving.

Driving is a privilage, not a right. While it is useful, it is not necessary. A buddy of mine, who was born here and lived here his whole life, is in his 40's and still has no driver's license.

I'm sure he's in a place where he's close by to a lot of things, or there is good public transportation. It isn't like that everywhere, though. So in many places, driving is necessary.

English is taught to the children of this nation all through school, not spanish, not french, not any asian, arabic, or latin, but English. If English is not the language of the US, then why is taught all through school k-12 and other languages only taught in 8-12 and as second languages?

Down here, classes are also taught in Spanish up until the ninth grade. Do you believe, after all that time, there are a lot of kids who still can't speak English?

she made a point I hadnt thought of,, there is actually REQUIRED IN THE CURRICULUM a course called ENGLISH.. ( I think one must currently have four years of it to graduate to higher education).

My child is required to take two years of Spanish in elementary school. My child can take three years of it though. The third year it's offered as an elective. High school does require 4 years of English. If you plan on going to college, you need to take 3-4 years of foreign language. The choices of languages in my child's high school are German, Spanish, and French.

My primary language is english, I took Latin in 6th and 7th grade, took 4 years of Honors Spanish and French in High School. My grandparents taught me Portuguese. I speak/read/write some burmese. I am also currently learning Mandarin Chinese and Russian. I actually love learning new languages and cultures. When I taught ESL one of my classes was a citizenship class and they have to be able to read, write, and speak english as well as be versed in the civics of this government. When there are opportunities out there for people to learn english I do not see why they do not take that opportunity. I will not visit a country unless I have proficient knowledge of the language and culture. I expect those that come into ours to do the same. It is a respect issue of anything else.

I think it's important that we look at this issue as a safety topic also.a year or so ago I was working in a large factory as a mechanic.Nearly everyone who worked there was non english speaking Mexicans or very poorly speaking Mexicans.Nearly everyday I would get broken nail guns dropped off on my desk for repair. The reason they were breaking was because they would never oil them.I tried to explain to them that if they didn't oil them they would break. But of course they couldn't understand me.When my boss kept getting charges for new parts(which could reach into hundreds of dollars per gun)he told me he was going to fire who ever failed to oil their guns.Despite me showing them what to do and telling them what to do they still would never do it.So in the end they were fired for something they probably had no clue over.If they would have spoken or understood english they would still have a job.

Another time I came to work with a note that one of the forklifts had a defective mast and not to operate it.I put a tag on the steering wheel saying "Danger do not operate" along with a description of the problem and took the key out.It wasn't 10 minutes later on of the Mexicans had taken the forklift(he also had a key)and tried to dump a load of garbage into the bin.He ended up breaking the entire mast off the forklift and spilling a few gallons of hydraulic oil all over the ground.Damage to the forklift was estimated at over 6,000 dollars(which was a rental). The tag was steel on the wheel!Of course he couldn't read it nor did he have the slighest idea of how safety procedures worked. He was also fired.

right now i dont think there is going to be tons of simpathy for this particular issue...many americans (legal ones that is) are pissed about lack of jobs and illegals working many jobs tends to piss people off....they can go through the hoops like thousands before them and become legal....and i believe if they want that....english should be a requirement.......if i moved to their country i wouldnt expect them to speak english to me let alone demand they print stuff in english for me...id take the time to learn it first if i really wanted to become one of their citizens...,.

I agree with you on this one, Bedlum.

Keep in mind, though, that they have no intentions at all of becoming legalized.

I listened to a Mexican news broadcast,

They are complaining about how tough the Illegals are having it here with all the States enforcing laws the feds should be enforcing.

It got some Mexicans here kinda' pissed until I show them a copy of Mexico's Immigration Laws. The Mexican Gov. has a few cost saving ways of dealing with Illegals.

Deporting them, putting them in prison until someone buys their freedom or killing them and disposing of the bodies.

Perhaps we should take some lessons from Mexico. Especially for the Illegals who are gang-bangers, murderers, pedophiles and there are plenty of them.

What does an American get if they steal an ID?

Answer; Prison.

What does an Illegal get when they steal an ID?

A job, welfare, bank loan, and a promise of amnesty.

From what I can see, they are working the jobs that many Americans do not want to take. I've known people who were unemployed who did not want to take certain jobs because they thought those jobs were beneath them. So, if Americans are not doing these jobs, it doesn't surprise me that illegals are being hired to do them, as someone has to.

I think most people who commit non violent crime, want a better life. Yet, they still must pay consequences for breaking the law,,not be rewarded.

I am an empathetic person but people wanting to make a better life is no excuse to excuse their crimes,,,or else our jails wouldnt be nearly as full.

There are so many homeless people, I refuse to believe they wouldnt be just as willing to do the work illegal immigrants do,,I think thats a PR ploy to blind people to the real issue. I think jobs arent beneath americans, I just think americans have standards regarding what a job should be (and what the law dictates) it is worth,,,while many immigrants do not know or do not care if they get exploited as long as they earn something. Supporting hiring illegal immigrants, is actually supporting their exploitation,,, it keeps companies from being held accountable to the requirements they have to go by with citizens...

Unemployment extensions keep the spoiled from seeking jobs "beneath" them. End the extensions and I bet you'd see a bigger rise in Pro-Legal sympathy.

There are people who would work those jobs. I know many who have no more unemployment that will take anything to keep from starving on the streets.

One thing to remember. Those who support Illegal activity are supporting corrupt big business and corrupt Government.

For one thing illegals are willing to work for so much less money, I am unemployed at this time, have been for 6 months and cannot find a job making what I was at my last job. Take the story 5 posts or so above about a forklift, I have been a certified forklift operator in the past but illegals will get these kind of jobs just because they will do it so much cheaper that I can, I have a household to support, mortgage, child support...etc. I don't buy into that crap about illegals doing jobs that us American's won't....

If you're unemployed there's a good chance you'll have to take a lower paying job, while looking for something else. People seem to hold off and keep looking for something that pays more, rather than taking anything that comes along.
