come on now fess up..

if you read a profile with spelling errors or bad grammar

do you automatically judge?

if you read someone's response to a thread and it has obvious flaws in it..

do you make assumptions about the author?

are you like a cat with a mouse
and like to play with your victim for a bit

or do ya just

Hell...
I have issues, dating anyone who has that book in paperback.

Accusing people you don't even know of being snobs, is a very snobbish thing to do.

The only difference between an anti-intellectual snob, and an intellectual snob, is that the intellectual snob will treat you with disdain, while the anti-intellectual snob will call you snotty immature names, and get the tense wrong.

I am not an intellectual snob. However, can I bother you for some Grey Poupon?

Nope Not a bit... I may have a very high IQ have a few degree's under my belt. what I don't have is the gift of the written word. I make several grammar errors, spelling is a nightmare for me, punctuation is hell for me.
So No I don't judge someone by their writing skills.
I do judge people by their persona ...

<raises her hand timidly>....yes, I judge.....I'm not proud of it and try not to, but yes, yes I do.
I don't expect perfection (and no, I'm not perfect either....upsetting as this news is to some of youhappy ), but there is sooooooo much laziness with chatting and texting these days that it simply gets annoying sometimes.

wat u sayin? bigsmile

if it's a language barrier issue then I understand and try to figure out what is meant..

if however, it is someone who is my age and mentally competent or at least would have an IQ score in the normal range then I tend to get a bit peeved if they do not have at least a base level of ability to speak or write their native tongue

I am not saying he or she has to be a Rhodes Scholar
lighten up Minglers...sheesh slaphead whoa

I don't judge at all, who cares if someone spells something wrong? Who am I to judge them? I am more concerned with the content of their words. A grammar Nazi screams to me a perfectionist and I know I will never be perfect so I keep moving.

Yes it bothers me, a lot. It irritates the heck out of me to be honest. Whether it's in English or my own language.
I don't see how that makes one an intellectual snob though.
Most of the time it does say something about someone's level of intelligence and / or education.
So it can be a good selection tool, if you know what type of mistakes to look for. Almost everyone does the they're/there/their thing wrong, especially native speakers laugh So that's not part of the selection thingy.

We have one here that always uses "are" instead of "or" and another member that always says "weather" instead of "whether". In the 2 years I've been here, I've never seen them use the right word, lol.

Hey, I'm a teacher! Can't help myself. And yes, I make mistakes myself as well at times.
I suffer greatly in my own forums. Younger members' written Dutch often is so bad .. and then the teacher in me starts screaming. I bleeping hate it!

So yes, if someone's language is bad, I walk. I can't stand it. It's like watching a movie with badly translated subtitles. You can only ignore it for so long.

Nope, my errors are plain to see, I get it wrong often.
From what I understand it is easier for us women to use mobiles than men. They often hit the wrong buttons.

Well, my spelling isn't perfect and grammar nazis often have a go at me about my punctuation.

No, it only really bothers me if their messages are boring. I get bored easily and I would rather read a short mesage containing typos that said that they were interested in meeting me so that we could have a proper chat than reading a lot of waffle. I don't generally date school teachers anyway, although I did have one girlfriend that worked with kids. Most people aren't using a proper keyboard these days and not everybody is a particularly good writer.

It depends on the context though. If I'm writing to someone in another country I want a proper letter out of them at least, or I'll find a penpal that can write well enough to do that. That's not something that I really make a habit out of doing though because I'm not looking for a long distance relationship.
