I personally think it's purely selfishness. Cuz I could never begin to understand any other reason r excuses for any spouse/partner to cheat on the other. To think someone would be so willing to risk everything they hav, just for a moment of self satisfaction. That to me is100% pure old-fashioned selfishness. No reasons or excuses needed..

It seems to me that it is mindless...an opportunity comes up and its taken without thinking of the harm done to the family at home. Then its too late once they are caught.

Thats exactly it "mindless". There's no need for damage control after that. Cuz that kinda damage just can't be fixed. But that's just my opinion.

Why Do Partners Cheat?

All sorts of reasons.

It has been said that Happy people in a committed relationship do not cheat.....

Just because someone is happy it doesn't mean they are automatically a good person, with perfect (or compatible/westernized "cheating bad!") morals, and/or absolute self control.

Is it a natural impulse or something else that draws them to do it?

It can be.

I mean when men (or women) see someone attractive blood flows to their genitals, certain hormones are released, and the subconscious is told to go pursue that other person for sex. A la lust.
It just happens. It's natural to happen. It's supposed to happen.

The brain isn't an absolute, though, the same for everyone.

Men go with men, women with women, some with both, some people are bi, mothers can have a kid and rather than bond with it feel depressed, or hate the kid, other mothers transfer all of their love to the kid and hate the father, rather than just partial transference also protecting the relationship.

The brain chemicals involved in "love" don't turn lust off, it's not like a space shuttle launch where once you get to the "love" atmosphere the "lust" booster rockets fall off and go away.
Love simply inhibits lust, as long as you are in a healthy relationship i.e. reminded of love, have your love on your mind.

Once you hit puberty (and aren't like a type of asexual) then for the rest of your life your body will react the same way to those you find attractive. Blood flows to the genitals, endorphins and hormones are released to induce behavior. That doesn't get shut off.
When you get older, you simply produce less of the hormones.

So IMO it's feasible there are certain "brain types" out there that are influenced less by the natural chemicals of "love" in inhibiting lust than others, especially at different stages in life.
They still feel the same way, loving, but it doesn't have the same side effects on behavior (inhibiting lust to a significant degree) for all people the same way.

But it's not always a "natural impulse."

There could be all sorts of other things going on.

What are your thoughts?

There's never going to be one single solitary absolute answer that can be applied unequivocally to any behavior and said that explains everything.

But for "some" people "natural impulse" (biological) "could" be an explanation, or part of one.

But it could just as easy be something like they don't feel fear to the same degree as other people, so don't fear losing the relationship, so aren't motivated to try and protect the relationship by avoiding behavior that would end it.

Or that they're lying about being happy and acting subconsciously to express that unhappiness and desire to sabotage the relationship.

It's subjective.

Once again, you have covered all of the bases with your explanation. Thanks

I have known people men/women that do cheat on occasion but swear they are Happy and Love their partners.....BUT still cheat.

Is it a natural impulse or something else that draws them to do it?

Well, a girl friend of mine once stated that "A guy cheats cause he has a penis". She followed this up with, "A girl cheats cause her man always thinks with his penis....just about other women and not the one he is with". She then had another vodka shot.

And women's psychology 101 is the best when vodka is involved.
