Why do I see so many men who have an unhappy main profile picture? They often look angry. I really don't like to respond to someone who looks so mean.

I am not sure why anyone puts up such ferocious photos but I have even seen some women do it also. Looks like they are stripped down ready to rumble.

I have often said men make profiles to intimidate other men or find running buddies to drink, hunt, and I guess ride motorcycles.

I don't know if they think they will be misinterpreted or made fun of but take off the shades, the stinky hat, and the frumpy undershirt and smile a little. Then they might actually have a shot at a reply.

I think more women would respond if they see a picture with a smile. Sometimes I pass on someone only because they look like a grouch.

Plenty of men think the same way.

Why do I see so many men who have an unhappy main profile picture?

Because women generally have sex with the alpha male that asserts power and serious confidence.

Not the comedic sidekick who's always smiling.

I really don't like to respond to someone who looks so mean.

Noticed you said "I really don't like to" rather than "I will never," or, "I never respond to..."

A lot of (or all) people that use online dating sites base their contact decisions by their emotional reaction to the photos.

Fear, anxiety, feeling challenged, wariness, negativity, all give sharper kicks to the emotional association strings than a general smile.

A greater emotional reaction gets attention and noticed. It induces you to pay greater focus and respond.
It's why "negging" works.

The more powerful the emotional reaction, the more likely you are going to do SOMETHING.
And in doing something, you provide them with an opportunity.

Without that kick, you just say to yourself "meh," and move on to the next profile or guy.

Want proof?

You started this thread based on "unhappy pictures."
They got you to do something. To focus on them. To associate with them.

I have never seen a thread titled "thanks for all the smiling pictures those of you who actually smile!"

Nope.

Women remember the non smiling ones.

Some will start forum threads, others will send an email and start a conversation.

Borrowed from one of our lovely moderators:

Well, you go here:

Upload it.

If you are attempting to upload from a mobile device
this may help:
...
How do I upload from an IPhone or IPad?
"I-phone/I-pad users should now see a specific set of instructions, on
the edit photo page. Below are the steps for uploading from an i-phone.

Click the edit photo button on your account page. on the right side of
the page, you should see an address, inside a box. That is a clickable
link. the menu should appear like this...

pbsfai010wzuasya@m.mingle2.com

1. Click on the address above, and copy it. (not on this post, on your
Mingle2 photo page)
2. Open the photo app on your device.
3. Select the photo you want to upload.
4. Tap the screen to bring up the on screen controls.
5. Tap the "send" icon at the far left of the on screen controls.
6. Select the "Email Photo" button.
7. Tap the "To:" textbox at the top to paste the email address
you copied earlier.

Mark's quote on picture file size:
"When it comes to uploading images to a Mingle2 account, the actual file
size is almost unlimited. The number of pixels in the image, however,
is limited to 10 million. In other words, the product of width*length
must not exceed 10000000.

Pictures should be in .gif, .jpg, or .bmp format." ~

Just a guess, from the point of view of ONE guy.

The thing is with me, I see my damn face every morning when I scrape it with the sharpest objects I can afford. I don't cruise around looking for opportunities to snap any MORE pictures of myself, so when someone or something (like a website) demands that I provide a picture, the only ones I can choose from, are bathroom mirror selfies (NEVER a good look), or the official ID photos that I had to have made for employers and law enforcement officials.

The one I've got now, was sent me by a friend who took pictures of my band playing.
