So, if you say you are going to do something, or help someone
...do you do it??
One thing I detest.... Someone who says one thing and doesn't follow through
I guess o should have put that on another thread, but the thought just came up me,,,

Hi Kitty, great Pic by the way!
Well, I don't go giving out my word. That would cheapen it. But, if a couple breaks up, they both have my word I won't be interfereing.
Or if the gal hits on me. My word is not to interfere again.

To this Native giving your word doesn't mean much, because history has proven giving your word as pointless. IF you mean actions speaking loud by being committed to your effort, relationship and family. Then yes.

I am a lot like Rob it a huge extent.
If I do give my "word" then it is a vow and I follow through.

That is like a promise to me I dont' promise unless I know without a shadow of doubt that I won't break it.

My grandfather taught me at a really young age ...
The only true value a person has is their promise
if easily broken they have little value

Mostly, I just let my actions speak for me. If you're my family or friend and something is important to you, I'm already on it, no need to ask.

I have done business deals and my word and a simple handshake , made it a done deal...so, I guess my word is something you can take to the bank... Now if women are involved, my word to them is gold....yeah yeah...all that glitters is not gold....but my word is....just saying...

my ex is that way.. and like you, I find it intolerable!

I won't make a promise I can't keep.
I will say that I'll try my best, or do what I can (especially when it comes to my kids/grandkids) however if I say I WILL do something, be somewhere etc.. I WILL follow thru (unless there's some unforeseen obstacle/emergency).. as Rob put.. actions speak louder than words!
for me it's the follow thru(or lack of) that shows peoples true character!

VERY few people will do something they say if it inconveniences them.

I do. I have lost jobs in order to keep my word. I have to live with myself. I can get another job.

I was just brought up that way. It's a horrible burden. It has caused me many problems.

A friend has told me to just always say you will do something. Then decide if you really want to do it when it actually comes to that time. I'm like WTF! Hmmm. Why are you my friend?

TRUE STORY

I volunteered to be the building safety coordinator a few years ago. Part of the job entailed staying in a room during a fire with handicapped co-workers and wait for fire personnel to show up.

During my review I received an average score for safety. I said WTF? I'm willing to place my safety in jeopardy in order to help others during a fire. I could die. What is above average? His reply was, "yeah, but you won't actually do that." Wow! Unbelievable!

From what I've experience the younger generations were never taught that their word matters. They have learned their morals from stupid fake TV shows and movies.

Handshakes no longer mean anything.

A man of honor is always committed to his words......he wouldn't try to be nice to someone just to get his way. Do the words that you speak, and think before you act......don't lie or find reasons for your actions just to come out clean. What comes out from your mouth is what you are as a person. Remember, some people may believe your lies at first, but truth will always prevail at the end.

Well... come hell or high water that's exactly what's going to happen..lol..
I'm stubborn that way..wink wink

I try.
Sometimes I succeed. Sometimes I fail. Sometimes it's both.
I've experienced situations where in order to fulfill one commitment I've had to break another.

Mostly I try really hard to keep from making commitments in the first place, without knowing very specific information, avoiding the emotionally triggered knee jerk commitments.

Avoiding commitments can sometimes be just as bad as:
Someone who says one thing and doesn't follow through

IMO a lot of people don't analyze commitments they ask others to commit to.

Many times, IMO, it's "Oh, you said one thing but didn't follow through," but rarely "should I have asked that of you?"

Yes I follow through with what I promised to someone because they are counting on me and I want to keep my word, but as far as myself, oh I lie to myself all the time.laugh

I traded natural gas for 32 years that's all we had was our word and you had to follow through or you get a bad reputation and people would not trade or counter trade with you. business would drop off the charts! I remember talking to a fellow trader who had 3.5 million dollar loss in one day because his counter party's were not good to their word.I had a few bean heads who would try that. That's when you use your contacts that risen in the ranks! It's called Applied pressure!!!

I lie to myself too.....like "Yeah....tomorrow I will fix that sink"...and then tomorrow comes and I am like...."Eh...it can wait. I don't need to wash my hands". laugh

The only way I don't keep my word is from some unforeseen circumstance, and even then I'll still attempt to make good on my word.
