Italy seems to be having hundreds of deaths every day, as a result of the virus. I don't know what is going on.  from what I understand cat.. there are several reasons .. Firstly ...Italy has a large elderly population (the second oldest population in the world ) . This means they have a higher percentage of vulnerable elderly who would fall in the high risk group for severe complications including death . Secondly ...Their social model is Very much based on the nuclear family ., often with two or more Nuclear families living together. It is not uncommon for adults in their thirties to still live in the family unit . Such close connections between young and elderly generations would make isolation/ separation very challenging .. . Thirdly ..Italy still has a class system with obvious social divides between the north and the south of Italy .. uneven distribution of healthcare resources would see rapid escalation in vulnerable populations ., Without a doubt the biggest contributing factor in Italy’s current situation is that community spread went undetected and uncontrolled In the early stages ...giving a highly contagious virus a window to accelerate . It is debatable if the government had a pandemic plan and how well this was executed . The result a virus out of control and a completely overwhelmed healthcare system ., |

So, further restrictions announced. All none essential shops to close until further notice. No gatherings of more than two people, unless family or the same household. Limited reasons for going outside, gathering essential supplies or medicine and only then as infrequently as possible. Limited or no social interaction unless absolutely necessary apart from funerals. Very similar here as of last night. Just that here it's 3 people. Hairdressers, nail salons and the like must stay closed now until 6 April. And now restrictions continue until June 1st instead of April 6. That's going to ruin businesses over here... My son works in a restaurant, spent more than a week cleaning but now it's done. Government will pay 90% of personnel's wages, so the boss has to cough up 10% without an income. Heavy times for businesses AND government... |

There are 2 major problems with the corona virus mitigation effort: the high population density in some parts of the country and the failure of some of the population to understand and follow the recommendations of public health officials. I guess some governors are just going to have to beat their people with a big stick until they listen!!!

Adelaide, australia, 6 lane major arterial road normally busy around midnight with shift workers and folks going home from evenings out; now 1 car every minute, no trucks, and long spells with no cars or not even distant lights seen at all.
When the "authorities" are running out of staples and luxuries, and bored out of their brains, and their investments are falling, it will be business as usual again. 9 dead in australia so far, total; don't people die from the flu every day unreported, no dramas ? Few cops around: a hoon was doing burnouts around the local streets for an hour, with no intervention; I was waiting for a popping tyre, or crash, - probably ran out of petrol. How come every country around the world can come up with billions and trillions to "help the economy", almost instantly, when just weeks earlier there were cutbacks, and austerity, and potential financial downturns. Will they all be borrowing from each other in a huge circular debt / loan cycle, with tax payers everywhere being fleeced ? Or is the authoritative panic, that it is much worse somehow, than 'they' are letting on. Like biological weapons grade bugs ? I just don't trust em. |

I would say the difference between the flu and covid is ... We have a vaccine for the flu and although it needs to be adjusted each year for most who have the vaccine ., it is effective . A vaccine for covid is quite sometime away . The flu is generally seasonal More prevalent in the colder seasons . Covid as of yet has not shown a seasonal tendency . And lastly covid is highly contagious with different modes of transmission . Influenza initially targets the upper respiratory tract . Covid very quickly targets the lower respiratory tract (lungs) . Influenza does not appear to cause fibrosis and permanent lung damage like covid is capable of . Although there were early comparisons between covid and the flu and they are capable of producing some similar symptoms . Covid has already shown the cells it targets are very different to the flu . If you know anything about angiotensin/renin receptors you will understand the very important function they have in the regulation of vital organs and the consequence if this receptor is indeed the doorway for covid. You are right many die from the flu every year .. without causing global recessions or panic . So what is different ??? It is obvious to me

Just read an article on Australia and the coronavirus. It had to do with the season of the year along with UV radiation (sunshine!). The article looked at where the major outbreaks in the world are and their spread. They think it may behave like the other viruses like the flu and the common cold which have seasonal peaks. If this is correct, the covid-19 will decrease in the northern hemisphere in the near time and then start to increase in the southern hemisphere. I guess time will tell us more about that in the next couple months.

The article looked at where the major outbreaks in the world are and their spread. They think it may behave like the other viruses like the flu and the common cold which have seasonal peaks. If this is correct, the covid-19 will decrease in the northern hemisphere in the near time and then start to increase in the southern hemisphere. I guess time will tell us more about that in the next couple months. ., I know that is a big concern in the pacific .. with winter looming ., healthcare services are already o we burdened ., to be honest healthcare has always operated in an underfunded state based on population size and needs For our two countries and the tiny pacific island nations there is growing concern that with influenza and covid hitting at same time .. services and resources will be overwhelmed. |
