What was the first job you had that gave you a pay check?

What kind of work do you do now and do you enjoy it?

My first job was in a sporting goods warehouse at age 15. That was my first official paycheck. Prior to that, I had been house sitting, walking dogs, and mowing lawns since I was about 12.

Now I am a restaurant cook, and though I like the work, I'm not sure I want to keep doing it. I have worked for 3 really bad owners in a row. One of them is wanted by the State and the FBI for tax evasion, amongst other charges. I'm a hard worker, but I want to be rewarded for that work....not be handed a "paper voucher" that has to be cashed on the spot.

Ooh, a cook. My parents are excellent cooks and have their own teeny restaurant, but they are well-known in their area. What sort of cuisine do you specialize in?

My parents invented chocolate extract. I bottled it. 42 years later I'm still getting paid. I am a landlord now. it's ok but it has it's moments.

I don't really have a specialty yet, though I am thinking more along the lines of Asian cuisine: Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Filipino, and maybe some Indian. I have already done a little of the first three. Even used to own a hand-made wok. I also like Cajun/Creole and BBQ too.

I grew up doing a lot of Italian cooking, but no restaurant around here does real Italian anymore. Everything is done quick and dirty. No one wants let chicken sit in milk overnight, or layer a parmagiana, or even slice eggplant the proper way. Most people don't even make a bolognese sauce properly....they just throw some hamburg and sausage in it. And I am only talking about the most basic Italian dishes so far.

Thing is, I never went to culinary school like Krupa did. So I'm still learning a few things. I only recently realized I should focus mainly on Asian food. It's something I have some experience with. It's something I enjoy eating. And it's something I enjoy learning about. Plus Filipino food seems a good way to bring everything together in the end. It already draws influence from southeast Asia and from China. There is some Japanese and Indian influence, as well as European (mainly Spanish).

In fact, if anyone knows of a great recipe for Pad Thai, I would love to have it. So far, I haven't liked the recipes I've come across.

When I was 16 I worked in a flower shop.
The proprietor also owned the funeral home
next door.
We cleaned the windows with embalming fluid.
Looked great, but what a smell..

Now, I run a vacation rental.
And I use Windex.

First job: I worked in my dad's machine shop. At age 12, he came to me and said, "I think you can learn how to work". I was like, "Dude. I'm 12. I just got my first boner. WTF???"

Now: Chemical Operations for a Life Sciences Corp. I get to work with machines, chemicals......basically I try not to kill myself and make my company money.
