Have to wonder why every time I try to just sit and enjoy a cup at Starbucks by myself, I am usually approached and asked "hows the brew today or something to that effect. Now, I do understand people just being friendly but.. because I am alone really does not mean I am wanting to entertain open conversation with strange guys. Anyone else out there having the same problem? I really hate to be mean so I will try to be a polite as possible but it usually winds up with me having to look at my watch and stating I have to go before I was really ready. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Virtually every time I'm peacefully enjoying a cup,
at a cafe, it gets ruined. I'll be sitting, deep in psychotic thought,
and some lady approaches me uninvited, and asks, "Can I top you up"?

Some of us have the opposite problem and feel invisible.
At least the ones who approach you open with friendly conversation.
I was at a Starbucks and somebody approached just to say he hates my kind

People actually acknowledge you? noway Where is that?

Some people developed a sofisticated technique where they just ignore you so you just go away. I am certainly not recommending that you do this.
Just saying. laugh

There is another motive...it may be that they find you attractive and feel that politely talking to you is a way of getting to know you, and maybe ask you out for an initial social get-together. This works for both genders.

I used to have the same problem at the gym.
I went to exercise but apparently there is a bigger market
in chatting there.

I would use headphones and keep my eyes closed..to no avail..
when I opened my eyes they would be lined up waiting to talk to me.

I would nod and look..vacantly blond..still no go.

These are social places, it is a real trick to be left alone.

I have this problem at work. I'm around people constantly and at lunch time, I like to go sit in the corner and have down time. I'm guessing some people have issues with being alone, so they assume you want or need company. I figured out if I have my phone in one hand, pretending to text or read, then they leave me alone, they still say hi, but they sit elsewhere. happy

On the other hand, maybe Mike6615 is right and they are attracted to you. If it bothers you though, and you want to continue having coffee at Starbucks, maybe consider bringing a book or magazine.

sounds like you don't have social skills and simply address mens approaches sad to blame others seeking conversation etc... does demonstrate a lack of empathy on your part...

I don't mind anyone chatting with me while I sit drinking coffee in my favorite bakery or coffee shop. No Starbucks here. I like to sit by the front window reading newspapers or magazines.
